- Notes
- Harriet went to Igerera B to guide participants how to practically build stoves. The participants had a challenge of measuring banana stems.HARRIET had asked them not to build stoves until she reaches in the village to avoid them making mistakes which will be had to correct after the stove had been built.
She reached in the village and found when the participants had already gathered all the materials that would be used to build stoves at Bosco’s home where a stove was supposed to be built.
HARRIET practically showed them how to measure banana stems and asked the participants to be mindful as they measure the banana stems because if the stem are too long they will affect the effectiveness of the stove . For example a banana stem used to create the hole where a cooking pot sits if it is too long it will require the stove to use more firewood to heat up the saurcepan for food to get ready. She told
them to use their two hands a s a measurement of this stem.
She also told them that the reason she recommended them to use their hands is that they are always with their hands other than using a tape measure which will be expensive or hard to maintain.
Participants stamped the dirt, moved the dirt in the kitchen and HARRIET guided them to build the stove in the opposite side of wind direction. She also explained to them that if they build the stove on the side where wind direction blows from it will bring back the smoke in the kitchen other than venting it out thus affecting its effectiveness.
The participants successfully built the stove as Harriet guided them. The chairperson LC1 kamya Charles thanked kibo for empowering them with a skill, being patient with them despite the many mistakes they have always made. Harriet encouraged them to practice on one more stove before her next visits to their village because practice makes perfect.
She had also planned to follow up on smearing of the stoves that had started cracking and construction of firewood risen stands but she could not do it because of time. However she told the participants who were at the meeting place to smear their stoves ,kitchens for them to look neat and last longer. She also advised them to construct firewood risen stands stock them with firewood so that they can use it during the time of scarcity.
