Notes
Tom made a visit to kalalu village to check on hand washing improvements through the construction of hand washing stands as well as dish rack construction. When Tom teacher the village, he was welcomed by five committee members who were waiting at the chairman’s home. They first held a short meeting to discuss about the progress of the program. The members spoke of good progress in the village when it comes to sanitation. One resident spoke of one resident who he thought will never construct a latrine but finally he has dug a pit and constructed the latrine. All the members were so happy for the vice chairman to finally finish his latrine as well as Mr Bakaki who for a lon time did not have a Latrine, the committee members said now he has a pit already finished. After the meeting they all left for the lower section in the section around the primary school. In one home they found a resident when he had just started on the pit and it was about 4ft. Tom and the committee members encouraged him to work hard and finish the pit for the latrine. They also encouraged him on the other facilities like the dish rack and the hand washing stand. In another home they found a new pit being dug about to be finished. The committee members encouraged him to finish the pit and construct on it as it might collapse due to the heavy rains. On the issue of hand washing, in the lower section, residents have embraced the idea and many have constructed the hand washing stand but many are yet to be cemented. There was a new dish rack they they saw in one home but it was not well constructed and built. One of the committee members advised the resident to demolish the dish rack and construct a better one that will last longer and serve him well. In one section of the village, one committee member had gone to cement the stands for those residents that had bought the cement. On Tom’s way out of the village, he saw two of the new stands that he had constructed. Tom was very thankful and happy for the commitment of the committee members and encouraged them to continue working to improve their community
