This meeting combined both the water user committee for the old village borehole and the sanitation committee and together with Alex they discussed about the ways how to speed up the sanitation program and also make strategies to work together as a combined force. Alex told the committee members that were added on the sanitation list from the last weeks’ general meeting that unless if all the forces are put together, then the village shall be able to meet the required sanitation standards. For the last several months there were only three active members that had been working with Alex to uplift the village sanitation standards and it was noticed that because of the big size of the village, it needed more people to be able to speed up the program in the village. It was during the previous village meeting that the active water user committee members declared to stand up and join the current people to speed up this program since the program was moving at a slow speed and yet the original deadline hadn’t been met. During this meeting, Alex told these committee members that they should not rely on only Kibo staff to change their village as this is not the Kibo way but rather join efforts working together and change their village. It starts with them as the village sanitation committee to move around the village to encourage all the people to work and meet the sanitation standards in their homes. They all vowed to work together and promised that this time round they feel more empowered to work and change their village. More focus shall be put on the homes that haven’t met the standards and move home to home guiding the people on facility construction and standards especially the dish rack. Together with the LC 1 of the village, they agreed to work together and will on Sunday 5/ 10/ 2020 hold a village water meeting and tell all the water users how much each home needs to contribute to meet the required amount of money towards their borehole repair . Kibo group plans to repair their borehole but the village needs to also raise their contributions and show the ownership before Kibo group can help them. They believe in two weeks, the village will have got all the money towards the borehole repair since it’s a very urgent need and then also the village sanitation standards will be met with the remaining people still lagging behind to have improved also. The joint committee has assigned individual responsibilities for each member for example Simon is in charge of the youths, Asudete and Mwayu in charge of the people that don’t spend much of the time at home but rather in drinking places. Beth is in charge of the women and must make sure they smear their facilities at home. 

Next Visit

2020-10-07 - Purpose: To go back and continue follow up on sanitation improvements in the village focusing on the homes that hadn’t met the sanitation standards and the borehole contributions.

The water and sanitation committee have committed themselves to work together to make sure the village sanitation standards required are achieved and the contributions towards their broken borehole is met

The sanitation committee should continue with their regular visits in all the homes make sure that all the people meet the required sanitation standards and the homes still working should be encouraged more to meet the standards.

Alex W held a joint meeting with the sanitation and water user committees discussing ways how to work together

Both the water user committee and the sanitation committee have committed to work together to make sure their village changes and meets the required sanitation standards and raise the required amount of money.

Yasoni one of the people that has had an open pit for along time has started to construct on his new pit latrine having dug a 40ft deep pit. Alex found when the workers had just finished to pour the slab and hopes to complete his permanent latrine in 5 days.

Ben also completed his new pit latrine after several months of Alex talking and encouraging him to have a pit latrine for his family.
