Tom made a visit to kalalu village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements. His emphasis was on the construction of latrines, hand washing stands and dishnrack construction.
When he arrived in the village, he was welcomed by committee members who were waiting at the chairman’s home. Because the weather was not so good and it was threatening to rain, Tom and the few community members moved to the lower section to check on facility constructions.
When they arrived in that section of the village, they found in the first three homes when they had constructed the hand washing stands but they have not yet cemented them. Tom and the committee members encouraged them to cement the hand washing stands so that they don’t break. In two other homes they found when the residents had started on the digging of the pits for their latrines. One of the latrines was being constructed and Tom encouraged the resident to construct it better with good materials.
On the issue of dish racks, the section has improved greatly with six new dish racks. Tom and the committee members encouraged them to always be observant to check for termites. One committee member was blamed by other members for constructing a latrine structure below standard. They encouraged him to demolish the new structure and construct a better one with bricks and mud. Tom left the village when the rains started coming.
