By the end of the lesson, the community members understand what Adolescent and puberty stage is and that it’s a phase in life everyone goes through. By the end of the lesson the community is able to know the body changes and what happens during this time and how to deal with this. Parents know that their involvement in this stage is very important.
Notes
Introduction Lorna meant to teach sex Education ; sex education promotes an understanding of sexual intercourse and reproduction, exploring sexuality and beliefs. It is important that both parents and teens know that it is important to talk on such things to avoid early pregnancies, marriages , HIV/AIDS among others. Overview When Lorna reached the meeting place, she found mostly the youth and few parents and she asked Sam what happened. Sam informed her that some members had gone to a burial in Nakyere while others had gone to the sub county for a meeting concerning their groups/ Sacco’s. This was why the attendance of the parents was low. Therefore Lorna decided to change the topic to Adolescence and puberty stage. The meeting started with a word of prayer and then a review of the previous lessons. Thes place where we had our meeting, was the first place we held our meeting when we resumed work after covid.. Nabituluntu has 5 groups so Lorna went back to the first group to review previous lessons. The last lesson was on Abortion where we we reminded ourselves the reasons why young girls abort and the dangers as to why. We reminded ourselves that when we delay to have sex, we will choose our life partners, we will be ready emotionally,we will avoid diseases like STIs among others. After the review we looked at the lesson for today Adolescence and puberty stage. Lorna asked them what was adolescence and Bosco defined it as a stage from Child hood to adulthood. They referred to it also as a stage whereby teenagers struggle to make the right decisions. Puberty stage was also defined as the period of body changes where we were able to list down these body changes. For girls for example we looked at development of breasts, menstrual period begins, hips enlargement, bums increase where as for boys; beards develop, voice deepens, some grow in height, pubic hair grows for both boys and girls among others. We were able to discuss that in this period some girls begin to fear their body appearance where Lorna gave an example of girls wearing sweaters over their uniforms because they fear their breasts, you find girls trying to find their identity, pimples develop and their self esteem becomes low. This stage comes first for girls ages 11 and 13 while boys come after that. For boys they begin to think that they can make their own decisions, begin to fight with their parents, start walking in a certain way, look for things they consider cool”. All this if not guided by their parents can lead to misbehaving. Lorna therefore encouraged the parents that were in this meeting to ensure that they walk with their children during this stage and guide them. The girls were also encouraged to love their bodies not to shy away and to know that all our bodies are different as they develop at different times. Conclusion It was concluded that this is a very critical stage and that all teens have to go through it. Lorna also added that developing of breast, hips or growing taller and getting a deeper voice does not mean one is ready for sex nor can make decisions on their own. Lorna encouraged the parents to always watch their children and talk to them as they need guidance in this stage especially during menstrationwhile the children or teens were encouraged to llisten to them.
