Notes
During this visit, Alex first met with the community development officer to discuss about the sanitation status of Butabira village and the plans to have the village borehole repaired. The CDO thanked Kibo group for the support towards this community and for having elevated the sanitation status of the village. This community before Kibo group started working here, this community was in such a terrible state with many homes lacking pit latrines. The village has currently improved greatly and has a reached a level whereby almost every home in the village has got a pit latrine they are using. Alex together with the village chairman and the water and sanitation committee members followed up on homes in the upper part of the village checking on all sanitation facilities and their standards and the main focus was on dish rack construction. The dish rack coverage in this village had been very low but has recently improved with more homes constructing these dish racks in their homes. This has been a challenge because many people lack trees to cut down because the village is surrounded with a large swamp. There are more hand washing facilities that have been constructed in the community and many homes have constructed two of them, one at the front and the other at the back next to the pit latrine. The current heavy rains that is pouring every day have some how caused a set back in facility construction and some facilities that weren’t roofed have been damaged. Alex together with the sanitation committee members continued to encourage the community residents to improve the standards and those whose facilities have been damaged to also work on them. Alex and the water and sanitation committee then held a meeting together to discuss about the borehole contributions towards their borehole repair. For the last two months, the water user committee has been fundraising for the borehole contributions encouraging all the village residents to contribute money towards their repair. However the biggest challenge has been that this borehole keeps breaking down almost every week and get off some money collected to fix it because of a great need. The water and sanitation committee members requested Alex to receive the money on their behalf so far at hand amounting to 430,000/= cash towards their borehole repair to take it to kibo office because it had become very hard to have all the money at once that is needed due to the rampant breakdown of this well. The water user committee promised to continue with the fundraising from the community to get more money towards this cause and would send it to Kibo group. Alex is to find out from the borehole spare part distribution company how much exactly it costs to buy the required parts for this borehole, the community contribute a 15% percentage and kibo group also contribute 85% percentage towards this Butabira borehole repair. It’s indeed a great need to have this borehole fixed because the village feel a big burden and have spent a lot of money trying to fix it temporarily but now requires a permanent solution soon. The community has also bought a new idea from WASH to construct a wall fence towards their well and are encouraging the community to contribute the necessary materials to build this kind of fence around the well with guidance from Kibo group WASH program.
