Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Harriet went to Ndalike village to introduce the Healthy and Safe kitchen to the community. She reached in the village and was welcomed by the Chairperson LC1 who welcomed her to their village. She asked the Chairperson LC1 to walk with her through some few homes to see whether they meet standards for the healthy and safe kitchen program and also to remobilize the participants to come and attend the meeting. She inspected some homes and found that most of them had kitchens though some needed to be improved because they had weak walls while other were leaking. Harriet encouraged them to improve them so that kibo will teach them how to build fuel efficient stoves. They later came back to the meeting place. HARRIET introduced the healthy and Safe kitchen as a program that teaches participants to build fuel efficient stoves which eliminate cases of fire accidents ,smoke which lead to eye and chest problems as reduce on the time spent in the forest looking for firewood. One of the participants called Tekozeku told the participants that this program is very suitable for their village because in their village they don’t have a forest where they can always get firewood on the daily basis. He added that since firewood is the only source of fuel for cooking they resorted to buy firewood to use to cook food which is also expensive. They also told HARRIET that the traditional three stones causes a lot of fire accidents to both child and women since they are the most people who cook food for the family. They added that this cause a lot of domestic violence in the homes as the men tend to blame their wives for the fire accidents. Harriet challenged the men whether they have tried to find out what causes fire accidents. This was Avery interesting question where men were very active to contribute. They said that some women are lazy and lack parenting skills thus neglecting their children as they cook food which cases fire accidents. The women also rose a concern that they are the most people who do a lot of domestic work right from cooking, fetching water, taking care of the animals ,the sick as well as taking of their husbands. They added that however much their tired the men can not carry the babies as they cook food for the family. HARRIET asked the men to at times help their wives with some home activities like even carrying the babies as they cook food for the family. She also told them that the goal of this program is to teach them how to build fuel efficient stoves which will reduce on such cases. She also told them that for them to qualify for the program they should ensure that they have quality kitchens which are well roofed with a strong well, well roofed to prevent rain from spoiling the stove. She also added that they also need to have all other sanitary home facilities like the bathrooms because after participants building stoves they will need to take a shower, latrines as the stove building process call for a gathering in a home which may need to use a latrine. She told them that she has visited some homes and found out that some have not yet met the standards and encouraged them to improve. The meeting was still going on but it was getting late and asked them to suggest the next meeting date, time and venue for the next meeting which is convenient for them. The participants proposed the next meeting to be on the 4th November 2020 at noon . HARRIET urged the participants to keep time for the next meeting in order to exhaust what she plans to teach them on that day. The participants thanked kibo for such an opportunity and promised to attend the next meeting.
