Notes
Tom made a visit to kishaike village to guide the village through the selection of a water user committee. Before he left for jinja, he called Mr Sanyu one of the committee members on the sanitation committee as well as the village leadership committee. He mentioned to Tom that there was a burial in the neighboring village Irwaniro. When Tom asked him if it would not affect the meeting he suggested that even though some people will go for the burial, he suggested that many would attend the meeting. He also said that he was going to move around mobilizing to remind the people of the meeting. When Tom arrived in the village, he found no one at the meeting place. He contacted Mr Sanyu who told him he was at the burial place but he was leaving coming back to kishaike. Tom also called the chairman of the village who was on his way to the meeting place. The chairman and Tom waited for a while before mr Sanyu joined them. They all sat for a while with only a few other residents who joined them. After Tom inquired if surely the mobilization was done and if the meeting was surely going to take place. The chairman right away suggested for the meeting to be postponed. Tom inquires as the why people were not coming to the meeting. The chairman mentioned of the burial as the elderly woman who had passed away was related to many people from Kishaike village. The chairman also mentioned of an issue that was going one at the police about some youth in the village who fought and that the police was looking to arrest some of the them. The chairman said this had also brought about some unintended tension in the village as many people especially those families where those youth come from were probably in hiding. After Tom hearing those issues, he agreed to postpone the meeting for the second time but with some strict measures. Tom suggested that unless it’s communicated well before hand, the next meeting would not be postponed and that it should go on. After the Tom suggested to both the chairman and mr Sanyu to visit some homes that are yet to finish their facilities especially the hand washing stands, latrines and dish racks. Tom and the two village leaders moved to the lower section and on there they found in three home newly constructed hand washing stands as well as two new dish racks. Tom and the chairman also encouraged one resident whose Latrine recently collapsed to rebuild a new structure on the old pit as it was still deep and usable. The resident was planning on abandoning the pit and dig a new one. Tom and the chairman guided him and offered suggestions on how he could still use the same pit by taking all the old logs off the pit, build a mud slab around the pit and then put on good long and secure logs. The resident was very happy for the advice and promised to work on it soon so that he can have his latrine back.
