Tom went to kisiro village for a follow up visit on Sanitation and hygiene improvements. On arriving in the village, he found when the committee members were waiting for him and together they started moving around the village. They first visited the home of Mr Geoffrey who they said for a long time had never had a latrine in his home. When they reached his home, they met him and he was able to show them his new latrine he’s constructing. When they checked the depth of the pit, they realized it was below standard. He said he will be using the new one temporarily as he digs a new pit to the right depth and construct on it a better structure. From there they went to the lower section to a section that Tom had never reached before. When they reached there, they found five homes all using one latrine which is even full. Tom and the police officer talked to them about being independent and each having his own latrine for his home and family. Three of the men right a way asked for the pick axe from one of the committee members who promised to give it to them. From there they found a new structure being constructed on a new pit and Tom talked to them about how they can construct the structure well using local materials. In another home of a widow, Tom was very encouraged when he found a new latrine being constructed in her home. She said she is constructing a new one after realizing that the old one is getting full and she did not want village committee members to tell her so she started on it. Tom thanked her for being proactive and taking the initiative to improve on the sanitation and hygiene in her home. In four other homes, Tom and the team found pits being dug while in one home, Tom and the committee members were so saddened by the state of the huts in which two pregnant women sleep in. In one woman’s hut, the roof has gone off and she is being rained on. It rained the previous night but they found when her mattress was wet. Her pregnancy is due as well as her co-wife. When Tom and the police officer spoke to them, they said there husband had neglected them for another new woman in the trading center. The police officer said because of the situation of the women, he was going to follow up and even left a letter inviting the man to report to the police station. In one home though, they found a lady mixing mud for making bricks to build the kitchen. She was very happy and thanked Tom for encouraging her and her husband to improve on there hygiene and sanitation. Later Tom left and headed for jinja.
