Notes
Harriet made a surprise visit to Igerera B village and this was intended to follow up on the progress of healthy and safe kitchen program . She reached in the village and was received by the Chairperson LC1 mr. Kamya Charles. Harriet asked him to update her how the village has progressed since kibo had not been there since December 2020. Charles told Harriet that all the 97 members in the group have stoves . They all cook on them except two stoves which were recently built waiting to dry so that the participants start cooking on them. Kamya also told Harriet that as far as smearing is concerned most participants have now smeared their home facilities, have firewood stored to use during time of scarcity. Harriet asked Charles to volunteer and walk with her through the homes of the participants to find out how they are progressing. Since no one was expecting her to visit the village , she would find them in their day to day life. They found most people cooking on their stoves and this was evidenced by the absence of three stones fire in the kitchens, food cooking by itself or being cooked by children. Also most homes had smeared their kitchens and stoves except a few homes and Harriet encouraged them to smear them again in order to look neat and last longer. However during the home visit she also came a cross two homes that complained that their stoves were not working well one contained the smoke inside and another one the small stove was not cooking at all. Harriet looked at them and found out that during the process of building them the team failed to target the wind direction there fore instead of wind blowing smoke out of the vent instead it blow it back into the kitchen. She encouraged the participants to be mindful of the wind direction to avoid such challenges , she also advised them to demolish it and build other one on the opposite side. While on the second stove ,Harriet found out when the hole that takes fire from the big stove to the small stove was blocked with a brick, she explained to the participants why fire was not reached the small stove due to blockage, she unblocked it and immediately the stove started working. She advised the participants to always consult from friends Incase their stoves have issues to help them fix the problem other than keeping quiet. As far as fire wood storage is concerned , some members had used all the firewood that they had stored and had not replaced it and Harriet encouraged them to replace it. The chairperson LC1 thanked kibo staff for always visiting them , guiding them and correcting their mistakes. Harriet also encouraged the Chairperson some times to follow up with his People and remind them where necessary.
