Notes
Tom meeting with some of the village leaders and community members discussing about the sanitation and hygiene program as well as selection the water user committee. When Tom arrived to the village, he found that some of the village leaders had gone to the sub-county but they said were coming back early. Tom used the time as he waited for the leaders and the residents by moving around the village checking on some facilities being constructed as well as checking on how they are being maintained. In some homes Tom visited, he found some new dish racks as well as new rubbish pits. Tom encouraged the community members to improve or make better some of the facilities that are not up to standard. After moving around, he came back to the meeting place and he found when some of the leaders were back and some residents had also arrived. During this time, the weather was changing and it was threatening to rain. The chairman suggested that instead of selecting the water user committee on that day, he felt it important to use the meeting to encourage residents on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as standards of facilities and then postpone the selecting of the water user committee for another day as the weather was not good. Tom used the meeting to speak about the village receiving a new well as well as mentioned what is important especially maintaining and improving on their sanitation and hygiene. During the meeting, the women accused some of the men in the village leaving work for them yet it’s important to work together. The chairman encouraged the man and women to work together especially when constructing and improving on sanitation facilities. He gave an example that a woman can cut the poles for the dish rack and the man to construct it or the man can help with the construction of the latrine but the woman takes the lead to maintaining and keeping it clean. The members also promised to work as a community to improve and get better as well and work together to achieve and get a borehole. Because of the weather, the selection of the water user committee was scheduled from another day and Tom left for jinja
