Notes
Martin Kibuka and Alex Walyomu were in Kitukiro village to carry out triggering in open defecation in the village. The village residents were well mobilized and attended in large numbers to learn more about the dangers of open defecation. Over 100 people attended the triggering session. From the baseline survey that was conducted recently in this village, many households were practicing open defecation and the village was generally in a very bad state. Over 50% of the households don’t meet the required sanitation standards. The village residents participated well during the triggering meeting, drawn the village map, spotted the homes in the village with open defecation and realized that their village was in trouble and needed to work together as a village to come out of this danger. The drama group was present and did a good job to mobilize people to attend the triggering meeting. They performed songs, drama and poem to teach the village residents the values of proper hygiene and sanitation. The leaders from the sub county led by the health assistant, Mr. Baguma Denis appreciated kibo group for the intervention in Kitukiro and told Alex and Martin that this had come at a right time since the need is alarming in this community. There is a great need for water since the available source serving three villages dried up and also the sanitation standards are critical. The village residents were encouraged to cooperate with kibo group since the government can’t do anything now in their village. This is a rare opportunity for their village and need to use it wisely and don’t take it for granted. After the whole process in triggering, the village residents selected a sanitation committee to aid this program. Kibo group supported this village with 4 new pick axes and 4 shovels to help this community as they construct these sanitation facilities in their homes. All the village members present were encouraged to construct facilities up to standard and gave themselves a one month deadline for the sanitation program. One village member called Joseph in a way to speed up the program promised to dig 3 pit latrines measuring 15 ft for 3 old people that can’t manage to dig on their own. This was welcomed by all the people in the village and promised to work very hard to reach the required standards since there is a critical need for water in the village.
