Notes
When Tom arrived in the village, he found when the committee members were waiting and together they moved in the lower section of the village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements and facility construction. They also first visited a few of the homes in the trading center where structures for latrines are being constructed. Tom thanked the residents especially the trading center for embracing the program and working towards improving their sanitation and hygiene. He encouraged them to construct better standard facilities that will last for a while. After visiting the homes in the trading centre, they moved to the lower section. In one home where the houses were severely leaking, Tom and the committee members found when the man had thatched the houses thus no leaking. The woman thanked Tom/kibo for helping them talk to their husband to fix the houses. Also he has continued with the digging of the new pit for the latrine. In the nearby homes, they found one resident and his wife making bricks to construct the shower facility. Tom and the committee members thanked them, for their work as well as another resident was doing the same. They also found two young men one constructing the shower facility while another digging the pit for the latrine. Tom encouraged and thanked them for their work and encouraged them to also help their elderly father in making of the bricks. In the home across, the resident was very happy to show Tom and the committee members his new latrine. Tom thanked him for the great effort but encouraged him to construct a better structure on the pit by adding on to its height as well as constructing the shower area. After visiting several homes in the lower section, they started moving upwards towards the trading center and on the way they could see more pits being dug but in one home, the committee members did not trust the depth of the pit and requested Tom to go and inspect the pit if it was the standard depth. The resident had already put logs on the pit and was about to start constructing the structure. When they checked the depth of the pit, it was just 4 ft instead of the 15 ft. The committee members removed the logs and requested the resident to continue digging up to the least depth of 15 ft before constructing the structure. The committee members were very thankful and some of them said the results of the Sanitation program are now being seen and appreciated kibo as well as encouraged Tom to continue working in their village to improve its sanitation and hygiene standards.
