Notes
On arrival, Tom and the committee members joined up and together they moved towards the section of the village called kisiro west. They were checking on sanitation and hygiene improvements through the construction of facilities like latrines, dish racks, shower areas as well as digging of rubbish pits. They started from the section near the primary school heading towards the upper trading center. In the first few homes they visited, they found new pits being dug but also many pits that had been constructed on yet they were below standard. When Tom and the committee members realized the problem, the committee members decided that they were going to be destroying all such pits and encourage the residents to redo their facilities. Also, in this section of the village, they found that in most homes there were live/planted bushes that were being used as shower areas. The committee members also suggested that those bushes should be cut down and encouraged the residents to construct better shower areas using bricks or mud because the bushes are breeding places for mosquitoes as well as act as hiding places for snakes. So, in every home they found such bushes, they cut it down as well as destroying pits that were below standard. This was a decision made by all the committee members and many residents mostly the women appreciated when the bushes were being cut because they don’t offer enough privacy like a brick shower facility would. This happened in many homes but in some homes, they found pits being dug to the standard and Tom together with the committee members thanked such residents and encouraged them to also construct standard structures on the pits. In one home, there was a woman who was so over joyed when she saw Tom and the committee members. She was so eager to show them her new latrine and she also requested Tom to take a picture of her self standing next to her latrine. She said in her entire life, this is the best latrine her home has ever had. Tom thanked her and also shared with her about maintaining it well through the use of ash to reduce the smell as well as chasing flies. In most homes where the bushes were cut, most of the men suggested that they will construct better shower facilities for their homes.
