Notes
Introduction Lorna went to Naibowa to introduce a new topic the Bridge Model. This lesson is very important because we have very many sources of information but the question is how do we use this information to cause behavior change. This lesson is also to find out what risks are affecting the young children in the community and how the information at disposal or at hand can be used. Overview Like Friday last week we had a meeting and therefore left Jinja late. However since it’s a rainy season the community members come late to the meetings or most of them actually keep in their gardens digging, planting. When we reached the village it was threatening to rain as we waited a while for other members, it started drizzling so we decided to go to the nearby church. We decided to start with the people that were around as our time was further spent. The chairman opened the meeting with a word of prayer and then delegated the mobilizer to go ahead with the agenda since he was not feeling well. Ivan took over the Agenda and asked the community members who remembered the last lesson we had. Different people put up their hands and it was good to see that they remembered. After the review Lorna was invited to teach. Lorna took them briefly back to Education and she asked what the challenges to education were and how we can overcome them. They mentioned poverty, children doing drugs, domestic violence, peer pressure, children not wanting to study by themselves among others . We also looked at some of the solutions to this . For example poverty we saw that poverty is not going away tomorrow but we have to find a way around it. If one Values Education and the future of their kids they will do whatever it takes. They said for example talk to the school administration, get bursaries, develop their children’s talents . One man said educating a child stems from ones heart and love for the future. After this we went to the bridge model. Lorna started by asking what the bridge is in Lusoga and they said “Olutindo”. She added what the use of a Lutindo was and they mentioned that it helps get someone from one point to another or a connection to get from point A to B. Lorna mentioned that today we are going to look at what we call the bridgemodel . She mentioned they are right and that the bridge model refers to how we can move from information to behavior change. Lorna also asked what were the various forms of or sources of information in this village ?. They mentioned radios which was the most common, televisions , news papers which they said were expensive, phones, meetings, churches, mosques among others. Lorna went ahead and mentioned that we have different sources of information but how we put this information to use matters. Lorna then went ahead and asked the community what the risk factors facing children are ; what do they hear on radio, in the village, in the country. They mentioned ; early pregnancy, drugs, early marriages, abortion, school dropout among others. Lorna used a board to draw the bridge model. At one point of the bridge there were people standing on all the information , in the middle is a river from the consequences of not using the information they have (which are the risks)and at the other point there is a positive healthy lifestyle. To get to the positive healthy life style we need a bridge with planks. Lorna mentioned that it’s everyone’s responsibility as parents, teachers, pastors, sheiks to ensure that this information enhances behavior change in our children. We went ahead and drew the bridge and we saw different skills like; communication skills- when our children can communicate well without being passive they can avoid many bad things from happening to them like early pregnancies, early marriages, we looked at decision making- making good decisions and knowing the consequences of their decisions, avoiding peer pressure, critical thinking, role modeling, negotiation Skills, relationship Skills among others. Putting a bridge with these planks can enable one to put information they have to good use which may lead to behavior change hence a good positive healthy life style. Challenge It rained the whole time during the lesson Conclusion The chairman Parents Teachers Association(PTA) thanked Lorna for the lesson and asked Lorna if it’s possible for her to talk to the parents if he invited her to one of the meetings. Lorna mentioned it would be a great opportunity. The community was thankful for the lesson.
