- Introduction
Lorna went to Naibowa to continue with the previous lesson before she could go ahead and introduce HIV/AIDS Awareness.
Overview
The meeting started with an opening prayer , few remarks from the chairman before Lorna was invited to teach. Lorna asked the community members to remind her what they learnt about previously and they mentioned “Olutindo” - Bridge model. Lorna asked someone to volunteer and explain spot the community what they understood from . One man explained to the community that we learnt about how to use information for a better life. Another person said we looked at all the risks facing young people and solutions. Lorna thanked them for remembering the lesson. Lorna mentioned that we are going to continue the lesson. She mentioned that many times we succeed in our lives but relapse happens. It’s still possible for someone to stop taking alcohol but falls back into that trap either by peer pressure or getting back to old habits. This does not necessarily mean that one has failed but we should be building reservoirs, life savers . Lorna mentioned when people relapse or go back to their old habits , it does not mean that they should give up on them but find other ways to bring them back to the bridge from the river. After this , Lorna mentioned that we were going to look at another topic HIV /AIDS Awareness.
Lorna mentioned that we were going to look at the history of HIV in Uganda and Facts and myths concerning HIV/AIDS. Lorna asked anyone to let us know how HIV entered Uganda. Some mentioned that it was the Americans that brought it in our country. Others mentioned that it came about during the guerilla war , others just heard from their grand parents that it came like a curse or that when someone caught it they would grow small and die eventually. There were so many different views on the history of HIV in Uganda . Lorna mentioned that their views are right but also it is said that HIV started in Rakai District in Masaka an island with a lot of commercial sex taking place. People having multiple partners and people thought they were being bewitched and they kept dying. Later on different NGOs , government institutions came in and started sensitizing people , encouraging people to test their status but there was a lot of stigma. However between now and then times have changed even though there is still stigma , there is more knowledge. After this we looked at Facts and myths on HIV/AIDS ; Lorna asked them what they think was true and not true about HIV ; they said Lorna should tell them. Lorna asked them questions like whether it’s true that only Americans suffered from HIV and they said everyone. Lorna mentioned that HIV affects mostly prostitutes but the community said no it’s not true. Sleeping with a virgin girl cures HIV and they laughed and said how. HIV is not passed through hugs, sharing utensils, it has a cure where they said no. On the facts we saw that HIV is real and has no cure, Affects both young and old, there treatments available however no cure, there still people dying of HIV, among others. We will continue from here in the next lesson.
Conclusion
Lorna thanked the community members for coming and encouraged them to tell others what it is that they have learnt and let’s learn together. Lorna asked that next week they mobilize themselves in larger numbers.
