- Introduction
Lorna went to Naibowa to teach about HIV transmission and prevention. This lesson consists of the fluids that transmit HIV. Also in this lesson, we look at the activities that transmit and those that don’t transmit HIV.
Overview
As soon as Lorna arrived in the village, it started pouring and it almost did not stop until we left. A few people managed to come to the church where we agreed to be meeting during this rainy season. We sat having conversation of how the village is and what’s happening. The community members told Lorna that they lost one of the community members about 20-23 years to Abortion. They told Lorna that the girl lost a lot of blood when she was carrying out the abortion and also that it was partly irresponsibility on part of the doctor. When Lorna asked about the parents of this girl , they said the father and mother separated and she got married else where. The father is a drunkard who had no close relationship with the daughter. It was so unfortunate also because it was the second time that this young mother was carrying out an abortion. The reason she carried out the Abortion is because she had other children but their father was not sending help. Lorna asked the community members around to be close to their children and help them and when they get pregnant , to encourage , counsel them to avoid such scenarios.
When the rain continued no one was able to get out of their houses and those of us in , we could not get out. Lorna decided to ask them what homework she had left them and they said men were to look at HIV prevention while women transmission. Lorna said because many of the community members did not come, she said we will just talk about one prevention method which was the use of condoms. Lorna asked why don’t people like condoms?. They mentioned that they associate condoms with infidelity. Lubaale asked but why should a married man have condoms unless it’s a family planning thing. The conversation of using a condom should be agreed on by both partners and not all of a sudden. One person asked what if while the wife is washing the clothes and they find a condom in the mans pocket? , what would they do?. 2 ladies said keep it and keep quiet. Lorna mentioned what if it’s more than 2 times ? . They said men tell them that they are protecting themselves . Lorna asked what if it’s the woman with the condom? And they said the man will just throw them out. Lorna responded and said keeping quiet could be good but other times it will just build up anger and affect the marriage so it’s better to talk about it. Talking in a way that’s not attacking because the man will defend himself but have a friendly conversation and find out what is going on and how to solve the problem.
Conclusion
Lubaale also asked between men and women, who is responsible for spreading HIV?. The women mentioned men but Lubaale also mentioned that one woman can have more than 4 men but when they all don’t know. Lorna mentioned it’s true but the bigger picture is not blaming each other. Lubaale was sad that it rained hard and people did not manage to come because the community was excited for this lesson. Lorna asked that they mobilize many people to fill the church for this lesson in the next visit. Lorna had to leave because it was getting late and the roads were going to be difficult to maneuver.
