Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Harriet went to Butabira village to teach the participants the goals and objectives of the Healthy and safe kitchen program and the gender productive and reproductive roles She reached in the village and found a few participants at the meeting place . She asked the participants to walk into the homes to mobilize more participants for the meeting. Interestingly after a few minutes more people turned up for the meeting. The meeting begun with an open prayer that led by possiano who thanked the Lord for providing journey mercies when ever they come to their village. The chairperson LC1 Mr . Buyinza Richard welcomed every one who had turned up for the meeting and asked every one to pay attention to what kibo has come to teach them. Kibo staff begun by welcoming every one to the meeting and asked them to participate in the lesson because no one is a custodian of knowledge and Learning is a continuous process so she expects the lesson to be participatory in nature. She begun by asking the participants to introduce them selves and by showing direction where their homes were. This was intended to create a rapport between kibo staff and the community and also to know whether the community was fully represented. Harriet begun by reviewing the previous lesson where she tasked the Participants to remain the meetings what she taught them in the previous meeting. It was very interesting to see that they all remembered what she had taught them previously. She told them the topic for the day was to discuss the gender productive and reproductive roles. She asked the participants to share the roles / activities that men do at home compared to those of men. One participants called Tiffu said that the men are responsible for buying salt, sugar, soap, work with their wives in the garden and the women were to look for firewood, fetch water ,do garden work, take care of the sick, clean the home, cook food among others. Harriet asked the participants to explain who does more work. The women rose hands and said that most men leave them to do all the work at home , they don’t help them at all and when they delay tofinish work especially cooking food on time they blame them / batter them and at times think of divorcing them thinking that they are lazy . One man ( Mugoya) said that some women spend most of time ghosping thus end up not fulfilling their domestic work. Harriet told them that a family is led by husband and wife and the wife is a helper to the husband therefore it is good for them to work together ,help one another where necessary. She added that the reason women grow older than men is because the men leave them to do most of the work by themselves. One participants( Enock) said that some men would love to help their wives especially to cook food but the challenge is that the kitchen is too smoky thus uncomfortable for them to sit in and cook.he categorized the kitchen as “ Hell”. He also added some women are quarrelsome therefore they don’t feel comfortable to help them. He also added that some women are careless who end up burning their children so the men prefer to go to bars to drink, come back late in the night when every one is done other that being at home watch all that. Harriet said that the women need to respect their husbands and Incase there is some thing that has annoyed them they should wait for their husbands and talk about it as a family other that quarreling which doesn’t communicate the message effectively. She also said that the women are not careless because no woman would love to burn her child but these are accidents which are caused by unstable traditional cooking open fires where saucepans sits on three unstable stones which at times end up causing fire accidents. She said that kibo plans to teach participants how to build fuel efficient which will eliminate smoke in the kitchen, reduce cases of fire accidents, use less firewood instead of a woman looking for firewood three times a day can look for them once a week, cooks fast because one can cook two things at ago. The program also teaches about smearing of their home facilities and its value, firewood storage. She also told them this program can also help them to have some time to rest or do other activities as food is cooking since some one can put food on fire and comes back when food is ready. She also reminded the women to only get involved in conversation that are developmental other than ghosting. She also told them that the reason why most women suffer from eyes and chest problems is because of the smoky environment they leave in as they cook food. Harriet also told the participants that for the program to be effective it requires equal participation from both men and women. She then asked them whether they feel this program will benefit them. The participants were very excited and were asking what they should buy as materials for building for kibo to implement this program in their community because they feel this program will directly benefit them.Harriet told them they shouldn’t worry about getting money to buy the materials for building stoves because the stoves are built out of the locally available materials which she will teach them as they go on.She also added that before the stove building begins they need to go through a series of theoretical lessons before the practical lessons begin. The participants thanked kibo staff for the Healthy and safe kitchen lessons and promised to participate because its educative and helpful to their families and health.
