Notes
On arrival in the village, Tom and the police officer met with the rest of the sanitation committee members and together they started moving around the village checking on sanitation and hygiene as well as sensitising the residents on the values of sanitation and hygiene in their homes. They moved in the trading centre section before also making a visit to the lower section to check on facility constructions as well as improvements being made in sanitation and hygiene in the village. In the trading centre, they were able to check and see 8 new latrines under construction while several were still being dug. The police officer encouraged the residents to embrace the program of sanitation and hygiene in the village as it’s the government’s desire to have healthy people. She emphasised on the point of spending money on medical bills as it’s not the best way to live but rather encouraged the residents to protect them selves from diseases through the construction of sanitation facilities in their homes such as latrines, dish racks, kitchen etc. from the trading center they moved to the lower section where they found new pits as well as people digging. In one home of a disabled resident, Tom together with the committee members and the police officer found when the resident together with his children were digging the pit for the latrine. He said he has not had a latrine in his home for a long time but vowed to change that by constructing a new latrine. He could not dig the latrine himself but, he was guiding the children on how to do it. Tom and the committee members also thanked and appreciated him for his desire and commitment to change for a better health life. One of his neighbours in the village thanked Tom and the committee members for encouraging the resident to have a latrine as he was being affected with open defecation from the disabled man and his family. They also moved further to the lower section where they found a resident constructing a kitchen for his family as well as a latrine for his family and mum. Tom and the committee members encouraged him to construct the latrine but to separate his door from his mum’s door so that they each have a separate door. In another home of two elderly men, one resident who is related to them promised to construct a latrine for them and the police officer encouraged him that it’s one of the best ways to get blessings from our parents when we help them in such situations as they kept us safe and health when we were young. Tom and the committee members were in the end approached by one village resident who gave them free tomatoes for the great work they are doing in the community. Tom later held a brief meeting with the committee members about mobilising the community for the next village meeting during Tom’s visit.
