Notes
Lorna went to Naibowa to teach the community on the lesson of Women and HIV/AIDS. By the end of this lesson, the community is aware of the many risks that put women at a disadvantage of contracting HIV/AIDS. Lorna met with a group of 15 people, the meeting started with a word of prayer and was followed by a review of the previous lesson taught before the lockdown. There were 3 volunteers who went ahead and reminded the entire group of what was taught previously. Lorna did not go much into it because Ismail a teacher at one of the primary Schools gave a very good review of the lesson. The chairman mentioned they were thankful that in their village they had only one case of a woman who divorced her husband because of the hard situation and he mentioned this was because of Kibo lessons. After this Lorna took over the meeting and greeted the community members and asked where the other parents were and they mentioned that they had another meeting somewhere hence the number. Lorna reminded them the reason for having only 20 members attend the meeting. After this we went to the topic of the day. Lorna started by sharing a story she had over the radio concerning a certain woman who went to the witch doctor for help and after trying every other means that failed,he told her to have sex with her which she agreed to. They did not use protection whatsoever which put her at risk of contracting HIV. Lorna gave another example of the girl in Kigalama village who under the same circumstances almost married off her daughter hadn’t Life skills staff intervened. This witch doctor had 3 wives already and Joy was to be the 4th wife at 14 years. The community members were very quiet and disturbed. Lubale mentioned it is true that witch doctors are the number one spreaders of HIV to their women in the community. He went ahead and mentioned they play around with the women’s minds giving them medicine which doesn’t work, asking for money and many things of which failure to pay they ask for sex or marriage in return, He was very happy and asked Lorna to teach their women and advise them to not be deceived. They give them charms to improve their marriages but in turn get to take them as their wives. Ismail seconded Lubale by saying instead of women going to hospital to find out what is wrong wit( them, they follow advise of the witch doctor and they end up treating what they don’t know. Other reasons were polygamous marriages, early marriages, rape, defilement, lack of information, long distances to health centers, non supportive husbands , women admiring things from men , one woman mentioned it is men who push them to get involved with other men because they don’t take charge of their responsibilities. This sprouted into an argument where Lorna mentioned there will be a topic on gender roles but not for this lesson. We looked at both biological factors like women having a larger mucous membrane than men hence receiving greater fluids, women having an internal organ making it hard to know if one has an std , cultural factors like bride price which for some makes women property, poverty among others. We concluded with Mother to child transmission of HIV that is how a mother passes on HIV to her child during this period. We looked at the 3 ways through breastfeeding, during pregnancy and during delivery. Women were encouraged to give birth to the hospitals at all costs and men encouraged to support their wives.

Program Success
Yes Ismail was chosen at the Parish level as an official of information. He was chosen because of the way he articulated himself and the way he responded to issues being discussed.
