Life Skills phased out of this School a few years ago however, on today’s visit, Lorna made a follow up visit to know how the village is doing and whether the program was still going on. Lorna visited the 3 sections of the village Sabagabo, Kagulu and Namuseno all in Kigalama. In Kavule section, we went to Swaibus home who was an active member during the course of the program in this village. Swaibus daughter JAnat attended the Life skills lessons unfortunately we got to learn later that she ran off with a certain man from the same village. Today however when we asked about JAnat we were happy to know that she was back at home and in the village. We got to talk to JAnat asked her what challenges she faced and how she finally came back home. She mentioned the man was mistreating her and we reminded ourselves of the lessons we learnt while at School among which were the challenges she was mentioning. We were joined by her sister Nahiya who just completed her primary seven and when we asked what her plan was, she mentioned she wanted to do a course on fashion and design and JAnat wanted to go for hairdressing. Lorna mentioned that all this is good but advised them on the importance of going back to school. They promised to think about it. Lorna talked to their father about their discussion and he was positive about them finishing school. She advised him about all the benefits that come with education and he said he was ready to take them back if they were interested. Generally from this village of Kigalama and from the conversations with the chairmen and the head teacher at Kigalama primary school, they mentioned that lockdown has not been a good one because it has had a number of girls getting pregnant. The head teacher at Kigalama primary school mentioned that he has gone home to home with police too sometimes but the parents say that they don’t have Busobozi” like money to support their families so they accept little gifts from the perpetrators instead of having the culprits arrested. Lorna advised them not to give up. She mentioned the parable of the sower to the head teacher like how some seeds fell on hard ground, got chocked by weeds but others fell on fertile ground and sprouted. Lorna advised them to keep encouraging the parents by sensitizing them on the importance of education for the girl child and the dangers of early pregnancy and marriages.
