Notes
Lorna went to Ikumbya to teach the community members on the a new topic the Bridge model. This Lesson is intended to bridge the gap between having information and using this information to cause behavioral change hence leading to a positive healthy life. We see that children know a great risk of sexual activity however despite all the information out there, children, teens as still falling victim. During the lesson, Lorna asked what a bridge is in lusoga and what is the importance of a bridge. We saw that the bridge enables one to move/ cross safely from point A to B. Lorna asked today what are the challenges facing our children in Ikumbya but also in Uganda. We looked at child marriages, teenage pregnancies, high levels of school drop out, bad peer groups, Alcohol and drugs, HIV/AIDS , rape, defilement among others. Lorna then paused a question of what are the sources of information in this village. They mentioned, radios, meetings, funerals, TVs etc. Lorna asked what kind of information do we hear, they said news, challenges in homes, challenges facing children, HIV AIDS programs, how to take care of our children ,stay safe , report cases of child abuse among others. Lorna mentioned despite the fact that we have an information overload , and people know what to do, every day there is someone getting infected with HIV , there is a teenage pregnancy, there is cases of rape among others. Therefore as stake holders, parents, teachers, chairmen, we need to play our part to build a bridge between information and a positive lifestyle. We saw that there many skills parents need to instill in their children like ; refusal skills, negotiation skills, communication skills, decision making, parents acting as role models , parents knowing their children’s friends, reporting cases of early pregnancy among others. One man thanked Lorna for the lesson and added to advise the parents not to send their children late to the trading centers, boreholes one the night, talk to their children . He mentioned that he had never attended the lesson but he has learnt a lot and thanked Kibo and asked the community members to be present for these lessons and teach others also. Challenge It’s raining and the community members are busy in the gardens. Social distancing is still a challenge. We are still following up on Aishas case. Lorna is continuing to council her and guide her against her mothers wish for her to get married.
