Health lesson 14: Domestic Violence
Notes
Diana and Ida went to BuKudhumira to teach about chicken feeds ratios and introduce domestic violence. The community had gathered ready to attend the lesson. Some of the members were hospitalized like Margret and Peter, who are both on the Bukudhumira committee. Sam opened by welcoming everyone and the Kibo team. The community also raised a concern of the thieves in Bukudhumira. They spend sleepless nights keeping their chicken, goats and cows. The worst bit is that they sleep with these animals in their houses, which is dangerous to their health. Diana and Ida asked what they are doing to curb the thieves, the community responded that they awake the whole night in the cold waiting for the thieves, but they don’t turn up, meaning the thieves are among themselves and they know all the operations. The community promised to kill and burn any one they come across stealing their things. Diana and Ida told them that it is not good to kill, but rather report the case to the police. They said they will try. The secretary Swaibu encouraged everyone to put whatever they are taught into practice. He welcomed Ida to take them through the poultry lessons. Ida took them through a recap, and it was surprising how the community understood the poultry lessons about feeding. She encouraged the community members to ask questions about feeding and the ratios of food to be given to the chicken, which they actively did. Ida also told them to register their membership at the district so that they can widen their knowledge on the poultry lessons. Diana. Came in and introduced the lesson of Domestic violence, the whole community rose with excitement, it is a lesson they anxiously waited for. Diana began by asking them if there is domestic violence in their community, they chorused that domestic violence is there. They need help to see how it can reduce in their community. Ida and Diana told them that it will reduce with joined efforts both the community empowerment program and community. Diana asked the community members to tell her the causes of domestic violence. Sumaya, said that the causes of domestic violence are; disrespect, quarreling, not greeting your partner, Sam, said that it is caused by not sharing money with your partner. Diana thanked them for brilliant answers and promised them that the lesson will continue next week. The community thanked Diana and Ida for the good lessons and taking their time to check on them.
