Notes
Maria and Irene went to this village to teach about pneumonia and Uganda’s major infectious communicable diseases. The chairperson welcomed all members for the health lessons and encouraged them to keep time, this was because members came late, after he asked one member to give us an opening prayer, then he invited Maria to speak to the members Maria thanked everyone for coming and she introduced the topic as Pneumonia. She asked members the causes, signs, prevention, and treatment of pneumonia, it being one of the major killer disease most especially in children under the age of five (5), and among the causes mentioned were; staying in places which are dusty, places with too much smoke, exposing children in so much cold weather mostly in new born children among others and after a clear explanation was given. Irene discussed about Uganda’s major infectious communicable diseases, these are the diseases some people think that they were just bewitched, through this lesson members learnt the truth and they were advised to always visit hospital for such cases mostly government hospitals because drugs are free. On addition to what was discussed, VHT Dinah shared her example of a neighbor who had a sick child for three days and the parents were in a shrine treating from there and the situation was just worsening not until Dinah went and grabbed the child and took her to hospital, after the examinations the child was found with severe malaria fortunately the child responded to the medication given in hospital. Advising members to always first visit the hospital , she strongly discouraged them from taking their children in shrines. After the lesson, Maria and Irene talked to Hajirah a 14 year old young mother who came for the health education lessons, she was looking so miserable and dirty. Hajirah shared her story with us on how she got the pregnancy, that it was on Christmas Day and when she went in the trading centre to have some fun and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, Isma a boy from the neighborhood gave her a Rolex( chapat with eggs) which resulted into pregnancy. Maria and Irene advised Hajirah to always return for antenatal services ,hospital delivery, and hygiene, also promised to make a follow up on her for safe delivery and postnatal period. The chairman thanked all members for coming and he asked Kibo to extend more programs to their village.
