Notes
In the previous meeting, together with the community members present we decided to also extend the topic to Busuyi local council since they complained of the distance and yet they want to be part of the program. We picked on volunteers who were going to teach the community members in Busuyi. These will become the life Skills teachers /educators in this community along with others as we go on. In Busuyi we were welcomed by the chairman as the meeting started with an opening prayer after which the chairman addressed the community and then Lorna was invited to teach. Lorna greeted the community members and thanked them for coming to the meeting. She asked anyone to remind them of the previous lesson that they had in this area of Naibowa and one old lady remembered and said we learnt about Menstrual hygiene and management. This was very impressive that the community remembered this topic and yet it had been a while. For those who were not there for this lesson, we were able to remind ourselves where the parents were urged to take their responsibility towards the girl child during this period and the boys as well so they are supportive to the girls. After the review, Lorna mentioned that today she was not going to be the one teaching but it was going to be their fellow community members and that sometimes that is what is going to be happening where we will have fellow community members teach themselves and this will inspire them and gain confidence. The topic was on HIV/ AIDS. There were 5 teachers in total and each of them picked on a topic to teach. This was also done not to create redundancy by doing the whole topic afresh in this section. The teachers were Khawa, Ivan, Muyodi, Wakiso , pastor Wilber . The topics taught were HIV/Transmission and prevention, History of HIV /AIDS in Uganda, Women and Hiv/AIDS, HIV and Behaviour change among others. Under transmission Isabiryes son mentioned that women are responsible for passing on Hiv to their children and he explained that for example when they are bonding and cuddling the baby the mother may kiss the baby on the mouth and transmit HIV to the baby. Wakiso was leading this session and he asked them was this true and some people said yes but one man mentioned as long as their is blood and wounds involved but kissing minus wounds and blood does not transmit HIV. Another question was what if someone drunk the blood of an infected person would they get infected?. Muyodi answered that unless there is wounds involved. Muyodi also took the community through which fluids transmit HIV and someone mentioned Saliva but Muyodi said no Saliva can’t transmit HIV. He also mentioned that semen also does not transmit HIV that’s why we can have HIV negative babies but HIV is transmitted through Semen, Flavia mentioned through breast milk. From here came a question at what period should breast feeding mothers stop breastfeeding?…Ivan answered at 6 months because at this period children could have developed teeth but we added that Also that it depends on the mothers anti bodies. Khawa also took the community through HIV and behavior change. Because of time w All teachers did not teach and we decided to carry on the lesson in the next visit. The session was very well taught and it showed that these teachers / volunteers that taught today were able to understand the topic well. They were so proud to be teaching which was really good. Questions asked; is it possible to have a couple where one is positive and another negative?. Muyodi mentioned yes and gave a story of a certain man who was negative but all his wives were positive. We saw that there are very few people 1% who cannot get HIV because there blood cannot get it but if they mess around they can transmit it. Another
