Notes
Enock, Tom and Alex went to this village to carryout triggering. They arrived early in this village to also continue with the mobilisation so that people can come early so that the lessons start early and end in time. After a period of 2 hours waiting they eventually started the triggering session. First of all they asked one of the residents to open the meeting with the word of prayer. When the meeting started, Enock, Tom And Alex.W introduced them selves and also introducd the program of community total led sanitation. The residents sat down to listen on what the program is all about. First of all they started with the walk of shame walking around to look for open defection places in some of the homes around the village. They got to find some homes with open defection and collected some feaces as one of the specimen while carrying out the demonstrations how flies move from feaces, fingers and food. They then got back to the meeting to continue triggering people’s mind on challenges resulting from open defection. During the mapping of the village, Tom asked the community residents who could draw the map of their village. All the people were so quiet for a while then one old man stood and said he could draw it. He started drawing the map as some people guided him to allocate all the roads and boundary of the village. This was an interesting session of the lessons, when Tom and Alex asked the people to now locate their homes on the map. People struggled to locate them as some people were directing them to their locations. It took some good time while drawing and locating the homes but eventually it came to a conclusion. Alex and Enock set up the demonstration specimen of feaces and food on the ground as the people watched how flies move from one place to another say from food to faeces and vise versa. Tom continued with the lessons where he asked them qualities of a good latrine, people mentioned all sorts of answers till they resorted to depth of 15ft and more, good foundation, brick walls, proper roof, door for privacy, latrine holes cover and well smeared. The people accept and all though when they asked whose home had all the qualities they mentioned there was non, the map was blank with any proper latrine. The residents all accepted to take on the challenge and improve on the sanitation levels. Tom also challenged them not to be happy if they have latrines and their fellow neighbours don’t have latrines. This is because flies can still move from those homes to their food and hence cause diseases like diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera, trachoma, Bilharzia and more. Tom asked them about the cost of treating diseases like diarrhoea which people participated as they gave out numbers on how they spend on just one disease and only one child, the figures were so high cause people have never taken time to calculate what they spend or the expenditure of treatment. They saw how much they spend to only one kid which was too much and some times the kids don’t even get well hence death or loss of the beloved ones. But this is all about poor sanitation, and open defection. They also continued teaching on the benefits of other facilities like shower areas, dish racks, kitchen areas, clean compounds, rubbish pits, smearing, hand washing facilities as some of the facilities that are important and they need to have them in their homes. The standardization was also mentioned and strongly encouraged to avoid doing repetitive work of reconstruction but to construct good structures that are durable. It was a successful visit and the residents are appreciative and willing to improve on the sanitation and hygiene.

2393 This is a group of village residents who decided to take the lead to improve on the sanitation for the good of their village and some government officials who came to attend triggering lessons in kalitumba village
2396 There was a debate on how many months will they take to complete the program. Some said three months and the others said four. They had to take a vote to decide which month amongst the two. They majority chose 4 months and all had to agree. This shows the start of the program to the proposed date of accomplishment.
2399 Tom busy emphasizing the points on challenged that occur due to poor sanitation. He asked questions on how much expenditure residents spend on treatment of diseases say Diarrhea. He then continued and wrote on the board the figures they told him from a small pharmacy to the hospital if diseases persist. People were shocked to see how much they spend on medication and yet they can prevent all that.
