Notes
Suzan went to the village to teach about food handling safety, and this was mostly carried out through a home to home visit. She decided to make a surprise visit and find out if the women were really cooking on their fuel efficient stoves or not. When she arrived there, she went to the meeting place and found some two members, Agnes and Christine who welcomed her to the village. Without wasting much time, Suzan requested they walk together within the village while visiting different homes and find out if the women were effectively cooking on their new improved stoves or not. As they walked, Suzan came across some women in their kitchens cooking on the three stones open flames besides the fuel efficient stoves. Some of the women were already participants in the program lessons but had not yet received the fuel efficient stoves. Suzan also noticed that the food which was cooked on the three stones stove, cooled down so fast because the wind blew off the fire easily. It was hard for them to make fire again because the stove consumed a lot of firewood yet the children felt hungry wanting food that very time. She began explaining to the women how it was important to always cook food on the improved stoves because they kept food warmer for a long time. She went ahead and requested the women to always see that the environment around the kitchen stays clean and healthy so as to avoid contaminating the food. The food to be served when it’s still warm enough and after consuming it, the utensils to be properly washed and put on the dish racks outside to sun dry. Lack of doing this would either lead to food poisoning or other infections mostly to the children. The members thanked Suzan for the lessons taught and promised to improve on their cooking ways as much as possible.
