Notes
Purpose of the visit, Manuela went to Kagulu village to review the previous lessons , discuss about the HIV/AIDS history then teach about the Facts and Myths of HIV/ AIDS. This lesson is aimed at assessing the participants if they have ideas about the Facts and Myths of HIV and AIDS infection in Uganda. Manuela found when some people had already gathered at the meeting place, Manuela greeted them and requested for a volunteer to pray as they prepare to open the session. After that, Manuela requested one participant to review the previous lesson, madam Mastula participated in that, while Mustula was conducting this activity , she would ask her fellow participants questions about the previous lessons then they would answer, for the rest of the participants who were giving wrong answers, she would give them room to think so that they can give Right answers even asking others to help in case the participants has failed to give right answers. That was really good. After reviewing the previous lesson, Manuela introduced the lesson of the day, Manuela asked participants questions about HIV and AIDS, she asked them, what is HIV virus? Where they did HIV start from in Uganda? One of the participants said that, HIV is AIDS, another person said that it’s a disease for immoral people, another person said that it’s a disease got from monkeys and dogs etc. Manuela also asked the participants where was HIV in Uganda, participants responded that they would hear that in Kampala, Masaka, there’s one who said jinja district, funny. Manuela also asked, what is AIDS, one participant said that AIDS is “ being small “that because before, when one is HIV positive they would become too tinny . Some of the participants shared a brief sad story about how HIV virus affected some of their family members . After that brain storming , Manuela explained to the participants that, HIV means Human Immune Virus, then she told them that, HIV is a virus that causes AIDS. She also explained to them the meaning of AIDS. Which is, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. Manuela also told them that AIDS is the combination of different diseases for example she sighted disease like Malaria, Diarrhea, Tuberculosis etc. after that, Manuela explained to the participants the history of HIV, she said in Uganda, HIV was first in Masaka district in a place called Rakai in 1980s, Manuela told them that rakai is a lake shower area where a lot of activity were carried out by then, like fishing, selling of fish, commercial sex, etc, Manuela told them that, time came people started falling sick and they didn’t know what they were suffering from, but it was HIV virus. But for them they would think that they are being bewitched by their fellows, instead of going to the hospital, they would go to the witch doctor spending money and animals. At around 1990, the government of Uganda started sensitizing people about HIV virus and encouraging people to go and test for HIV, though results would take long by then, but most of the people in that palace were already positive with HIV , and the virus already spread to other parts of the district. After that brief information about the History of HIV/AIDS, Manuela asked the participants about the Facts and Myths of HIV, participants managed to share their ideas about the myths, they stated answers like - HIV is a disease for got from dogs and monkeys - HIV is a disease for whites and they have the medication that cures HIV. - HIV is a disease for immoral people After that brain storming, Manuela told the participants that it’s true that is how people would think in the past, How about today? Manuela asked the participants, no answers, they requested Manuela to explain to them, Manuela told them that, HIV is real and it has no cure, everyone has a potential in getting-the Virus, it’s not a disease for immoral people any body can get it, HIV can affect all people not only the whites and they don’t have the cure, but they also use ARVs for treatment. After that explanation , one of the participants asked Manuela that what is the difference between HIV and AIDS, Manuela told her that , that is a good question but they will cover that in the next lesson. Finally, Manuela encouraged the participants to share what they have learnt with their children and their fellow participants who were unable to attend today’s session due to unwanted circumstances.
