Notes
Tom and Martin made a visit to Kitukiro village to assess the sanitation improvements in the village. They were joined by the village chairman Mr Kaluya on their arrival to the village. The chairman thanked Tom for the work kibo has done in the village as well as supporting them especially with the tools to construct facilities as well as cement to help them constructing hand washing stands and jericans for hand washing. When asked about the benefits of the hand washing stands and the jericans, the chairman said he is thankful for this new model because its safe, easy to manage and long lasting. He said Tippy Taps lasted for a short time and were hard to manage. He said since the idea was introduced in the village, he saw its importance and started encouraging and also helping all the village residents with the stand construction. They moved in homes to check on the hygiene, standards and cleanliness of the facilities especially the jericans but they were all clean and facilities well constructed in most of the homes. In some few homes were the standards were below, the residents were encouraged to construct new facilities or modify the facilities to meet the standards. The chairman of the village is very proud and happy for the change in his village because many surrounding villages admire how his village has changed and improved. He also reported that the government officials at the sub-county are recommending other villages to use Kitukiro as a demo village and do the same that Kitukiro has done. As they moved around to the upper section, Tom realized that in most homes, the jerican water for hand washing was brownish compared to the water in the jericans of most homes in the lower section. The chairman and two other resident asked said the residents on the upper section are far from the borehole so they get their water from the swamp for washing, cooking, bathing, hand washing and some even for drinking unless someone had a bicycle to use to collect water from the lower borehole to use for drinking. This was touching because even through the challenges of lacking clean water, the residents are committed to improving and changing the hand washing habits be with swamp water. As they moved, Tom noticed that there were many latrine structures unroofed. He mentioned to the chairman that Kibo has a program of helping with roofing materials especially with Iron roofs. He said the cost of iron sheets has to be shared 50% between kibo and the community resident. The chairman was so thankful and said he was going to pass the information to most of the residents who would or are in need of roofing their latrine structures. Tom thanked and appreciated the chairman for the work he and his team as well as Martin and Steven for the great work they have done in the village. He promised that kibo will stay connected and committed to the health improvements of the village especially through the sanitation and hygiene activities.
