Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, community members know that Abortion kills and is illegal. By the end of the lesson, community members reasons and dangers of drinking too much Alcohol.
Notes
Previously we looked at the causes and dangers of early pregnancy and early marriages alike. One of the causes was parents who are tough towards their children, not providing their basic needs. In today’s lesson we looked at Abortion which is also a consequence of early pregnancy due to fear as well as reasons and dangers of drinking Alcohol. On the topic of Abortion, we looked at it as the premature removal of a baby from the womb before its due time. Lorna asked the community whether Abortion is legal and some kept quiet while others said yes. Lorna mentioned it is illegal in Uganda and only legal when the baby or the mothers life are in danger and should be done by a qualified personnel. Lorna mentioned that there many reasons why girls and someone shouted even mothers carry out Abortion. Abortion is taking life and no one has the right to take life or does anyone Lorna asked and they nodded no. We looked at some reasons/ causes and again the first reason was fear of parents on the girls part” what will happen if my parents found out”. Parents were encouraged to befriend their children so they are open about everything. On the boys part , lack of enough resources to take care of the girl and baby hence Abortion which is wrong. Peer pressure from friends who somehow have some experience, mothers siding with their daughters to take out the Baby/fetus. Fear of school dropout was another, fear from the girl on not being ready to become a mother, among others. We looked at the dangers like ; Death can be due to over bleeding,complications in the stomach, low chance of giving birth in future. Scars on the uterus , fistula among others. Lorna concluded this topic by saying no one has a right to take life and that these mistakes are human however, encouraged the parents especially mothers not to hide this kind of information from the fathers or husbands for the sake of the children. After here we looked at Alcohol and drug Abuse. Lorna started by asking are there people who drink Alcohol in this village and they shouted yes. Lorna asked whether there is such a thing as a good or bad drinker and the community members mentioned yes especially when they don’t fulfill their responsibilities. Lorna thanked them for their responses and mentioned let’s quickly go onto the next question which was what are the reasons people give for taking Alcohol. Peer pressure because my friends are drinking, let me also drink”. Other reasons were ; running away from problems and this is where Lorna told them Alcohol will not take away the problems one has, others to gain popularity, to fit in peers, Doctors order but in small quantities, to pass time, among others. We then looked at the dangers of too much Alcohol like fighting, abusing others, loss of respects, poverty since one keeps drinking the money, psychological torture in children with Alcoholic parents, poverty divorce, domestic violence, not fulfilling one’s responsibilities at home as a husband, father , long term illnesses among others. We concluded by mentioning that Abortion is bad and illegal and punishable by law. Lorna advised the parents to let the children keep their babies and go back to school thereafter. On Alcohol and drugs Lorna encouraged the parents to drink responsibly or quit for good. One lady mentioned that they should drink from home. Also the chairman mentioned that as him he drinks but he makes sure every need at home he meets. He discouraged parents from drinking in front of their children or having their children buy the alcohol on their behalf.
