Maria ad Irene went to Ituba Namalowe to teach about Malaria and upper respiratory tract diseases. The VHT Mr.Magala welcomed everyone and thanked Kibo staff for the love and care towards this village then he asked Nankwanga to lead us in a opening Prayer. The VHT encouraged members to always keep time for the lesson does not last for so long, then Maria was invited to speak to the members. The community together with Maria discussed the mode of spread, signs and symptoms, causes, prevention and treatment of Malaria. Zubaili thanked the government for providing mosquito nets but he also said most people use the mosquito nets to rear their young chicks, others put on the top of their huts to protect the grass from falling away by wind, while others tie around nursery beds in the swamps. Micheal also said that most families spend the entire day in the swamps digging and their homes are left so bushy and mosquitos breed from these places and at the end of the day people suffer from malaria. Maria encouraged all members to sleep under mosquito nets most especially the pregnant mothers and children , have their homes sprayed, clear the bush around the home, in case of any signs to go to hospital for proper treatment. Still Maria and the members discussed the signs of upper respiratory tract diseases, some of which present like those in malaria patients. Maria emphasized on the difference between malaria and the upper respiratory tract diseases because in most villages people have one name for both which is malaria. Members where encouraged to test for Malaria as this will help them treat the rightful infection and so save money for re admission. After we continued with our discussion on how parents are keeping their children at home during the lockdown of schools, how children are behaving in the community, and at home. Most children have lost hope of going back to school due to the prolonged period they have been at home said Kauda, Most girls have been married off by their parents and some have given birth and they do not even dream of going back to school Mukose shared. The VHT Mr. Magala said that most parents have ignored their responsibilities, not caring about their children and the children are looking for money for survival and in so doing it ends in trouble for both the child and parent. We encouraged the parents to speak to their children, advising them to be patient with this situation, parents to take up their responsibilities. The girls who gave birth during this lockdown should plan to go back to school for there is still a bright future for them. Parents should engage their children in domestic work , show them love and care, protect and listen to their views and complaints. Also to embrace technical schools in case they have no money for expensive tertiary institutions. Members were thanked for their turn up and encouraged to remind others.
