Notes
Maria went to Nawandyo A, to teach about personal hygiene and oral care. The chairperson thanked Kibo for the love and support towards this village, he then requested Muhamed to open with a word of prayer. Thereafter he invited all members in the meeting, asking them to pay much attention during the meeting. Maria thanked everyone for turning up, then made a review of the previous lesson after she introduced the topic as Personal hygiene and oral care. The discussion started by defining the term personal hygiene, saida said that it is how you bath your body, Muhamed said that is how you look like. Maria gave them a clear definition and said that it is how we care for our bodies or body parts. The community members together with Maria discussed how we can improve on our personal hygiene, the values of personal hygiene, signs & symptoms of dental health related issues demonstrating on how to brush & floss the teeth, and the benefits of personal hygiene. Members mentioned the different things used when brushing; soap, ash, salt, charcoal, toothpaste, sand, among others. Maria advised the members on what should be used; toothpaste, salt among others and also discouraged with them on using soap, sand as these may cause a lot of harm to their gum, mouth. More emphasis was put on the person’s hygiene including Trimming off nails, washing hands, cleaning the toilet, shower rooms, bathing, etc. she encouraged them to have a thorough bath cleaning every part of the body and at least two times a day, and also brushing & flossing at least two times a day. Maria encouraged them to wash hands as much as they can mostly when sneezing, before eating, after and before you handle food, any time you handle an animal. Together we discussed the side effects of poor hygiene as diarrhea, athlete’s foot, ring worm, scabies etc and members were encouraged to help their children with brushing, trimming off hair, trimming nails, bathing among others. After the meeting, Maria went to check on one of the mother who gave birth. Rachael gave birth from a health facility as taught and recommended by community health education staff .Racheal and the baby are in good condition even the baby was taken back for immunization.
