Notes
Ida went to Ndalike to teach about solutions to domestic violence. She first took the class into a quick recap which was well done. The members defined well what domestic violence is. Tibikomwa Irene said that domestic violence is an act of physical violence, sexual, psychological or emotional violence that can be committed by a family member or intimate partner. Ida continued to ask if anyone knew any solution to domestic violence,: Irene Tibikomwa said that one of the solutions to domestic violence is provision of advocacy and legal assistance which will include: Provision of financial support Access to custody of children Solving issues with property distribution among the partners. Irene Tibikomwa elaborated more on why it’s important to provide financial support to the family. This will reduce the rate of school dropouts and children running from home to streets. With property distribution Irene Tibikomwa said that it’s wise to distribute property when you are still alive to avoid problems in future when you are no more. Ida too gave some solutions to domestic violence below: 1 : Provision of emotional support. The victims of abuse need to be provided with emotional support through the following means: Helping the victims to build self-esteem and self confidence. Developing courses on parenting skills. Organizing sessions that teach people how to deal with issues of domestic violence. 2 : provision of supplementary support services: This include provision of housing and safe accommodation, provision of childcare and making it easy for the victims to access the community services. Ida too suggested that children should be taught how men should treat women and the appropriate ways to suitably express their emotions. Boys and men be raised with the knowledge that it is fine for men to cry show some sort of “ weak”emotions and that the emotions of Anger should not be the only acceptable emotion for boys. Mugote too contributed towards the discussion saying that LOVE is only solution to domestic violence because no one can hurt, harm or kill someone he/ she loves.
