By the end of the lesson, community members know their role and responsibilities
Notes
In Naibowa we are teaching in Gender roles and responsibilities and interestingly the community members don’t want to go off this topic. In today’s lesson we continued to look at the role of a woman and man together with their responsibilities. The meeting opened with a word of prayer and thereafter the chairman had a few opening remarks where he greeted the community members, he however quotioned them for coming late and also apologized to Lorna that unfortunately there was a burial in a nearby village where some members had gone to. He asked Lorna not to be discouraged but go ahead and teach those available. After this He asked the community members what the previous lesson was about. Nabirye mentioned that we looked at gender roles and responsibilities. They asked that we do not move fast in this topic since it is what is disturbing most families that men do not know or have thrown away their roles and responsibilities. After this he asked Lorna to take over and go ahead and teach them the story of the day. We continued with the different roles and responsibilities where Wakiso put up his hand and asked a question that why is it that it is mostly women we find at parents teachers meetings at school, burials and even meetings.. he asked his fellow men to forgive him but that we needed to know the truth. He went ahead and asked is it not the duty of man an woman to take care of their children then why is it that men slack when it comes to these issues. Marina mentioned that because men think they are wise. They have no time for the children. Lorna asked whose responsibility is for the upbringing of the child and they mentioned both men and women and Lorna encouraged them not to just give birth and not participate in the upbringing and welfare of their children. Lorna asked who does the cooking and they mentioned women. Lorna then asked the women do their men help them cook and some said yes. Lorna asked the men in the meeting who helps their wives cook and most of them put up their hands and Lorna asked the women wether this is true and they said yes. One man however said he only cooks when the wife is sick or has travelled however Wakiso said that shouldn’t be the case. Lorna was proud of the men. Wakiso added that it does not make one less of a man when they cook. Lorna asked the women to clap for these men. Lorna mentioned that at school there was a debate of mother is better than father discuss “. Lorna asked whether they know this debate and they said yes and 100 percent supported their mothers and we saw that because men are not good at fulfilling their roles and responsibilities. We looked at other roles like disciplining children, instilling the fear of God in their children. A father is a protector, sole bread winner, provider, while the woman complements the man as a cook, counselor, lawyer, discipliner among others. One woman mentioned that her husband leaves home early in the morning , goes to play cards and returns home with nothing expecting to eat. What should she do?. Lorna told her to tell him to come for these meetings and she said he is big headed. Lorna asked who his friend is and he put up his hand. We encouraged him to talk to him. Another men mentioned to her to submit to him , talk softly don’t be angry all the time , respect him and when he sees that he will come around. Wakiso told the men that they can help out with simples chores at home .He said that men should agree with him that the women are the most hardworking but that these chores need to be shared equally. This was nice to hear. He said unfortunately other members have not come to hear this but that it should start with them. Lorna mentioned this cones with mutual respect We concluded the lesson by mentioning that for a family to thrive, each one should treat the other party as a partner in everything ; looking after children, helping out in house chores. Each one men and female should know what their responsibilities are. Lorna asked parents to also engage their children in these chores when young so they don’t have to struggle when they have grown up. We will look at Bride Price next as Lorna introduced it a little bit in this meeting. She urged them to come in big numbers.
