Notes
Lorna went to Mpumiro to teach group B on Assertiveness and then also introduce Relationship Skills. Lorna started by meeting with the pupils first where they learnt dangers of Alcohol and drug abuse. Lorna asked them why do people drink Alcohol and they mentioned to pass time, to forget their problems, peer pressure, to feel good, to face their fears, drugs give them false energy among others. Lorna asked them whether it was good to take Alcohol and they said no and she asked them why. Shafique mentioned that it can lead to fighting which can lead to death and imprisonment, Nkenga said it brings disrespect that no one respects a drunkard. Another said it makes them wet their pants, leads to liver and brain damage, leads to poverty, leads to one running mad among others. Lorna then told them to desist from Alcohol because it can destroy their lives. She told them to resist peer pressure to drink Alcohol as it will get them in trouble like drop out of school, bring them trouble with their parents. The lesson went on for about an hour after which Lorna sent the children home as she waited for the parents. When the community members had come to the meeting, we started by an opening prayer and then later the chairman addressing the community members before welcoming Lorna to teach them. He mentioned to the parents that Lorna is doing a good job with the children and that today he had a chance to sit in their class and listen in on their lesson. He appreciated Lorna and the parents for sending their children because they are the future generation. After this he encouraged Lorna to take over from there. Lorna however asked for volunteers from the previous week to be the ones teaching their fellow community members in today’s lesson. The chairman offered to volunteer to teach . He mentioned that we looked at communication and the different communication styles and behaviours of Aggressiveness , Assertiveness and passiveness . He gave examples on each and mentioned that the best Communication style is Assertiveness where one thinks before they speak, listens to others, looks for unity , respects peoples views, stands on the truth , among others. After that , Lorn asked the community to clap for him and then Lorna introduced Relationship Skills. Lorna asked them what it means by having a good relationship with others. They asked in a home or community in general?. Lorna mentioned general and Musa mentioned for example when we are coming together in meetings like this, it shows good working relationships, when community members attend funerals together , functions together it implicates good working relationships. We then looked at importance of good relationships with each other and what it entails like; It brings about development , promotes friendships, promotes unity , a community thrives when everyone is working well together. It is the same when it comes to family when the parents are working well together and are happy. Lorna encouraged the community members to always put their differences aside for the betterment of their families and homes. Because when we do so we will see less domestic violence, theft , early pregnancy cases among others. We concluded by saying it is more rewarding to work together than apart and she went ahead and mentioned that they should not put their disagreements as parents into their children.

However on finding out she said that this was her second pregnancy and that she got pregnant while still at School. After which she dropped out and later got married. When Lorna asked her if she was forced into marriage, she said no it was her choice. Because of time they did not talk much but Lorna plans to continue this conversation with her on another visit.
