Notes
Harriet went to Kamudoke to introduce the Healthy and safe kitchen program to the community as well as sharing the home to home visit findings. Harriet wanted to base on her findings during the home to home visits so that the community would connect their way of life to the program. She reached in the village and found a few participants waiting and shortly other participants also joined. The meeting begun with an open prayer that was led by Vht called Akuzas who thanked the lord for the journey mercies that He always grant to kibo staff. Harriet welcomed the participants to the meeting and requested them to introduce themselves and show directions where they come from. This was intended to create easy connection between kibo staff and the community as well as to create a raport. It was so nice to see that some participants had come as a couple to learn together and Harriet encouraged the women who had left their husbands behind to bring them in the next meeting because for the program to be successful both men and women should get involved. Harriet told them that during her previous visit she walked home to home and found most of them cooking on the traditional three open flames which produced a lot of smoke, used a lot of firewood that produced a lot of ash that made the kitchens look un tidy. Some had dirty utensils scattered all over the kitchen, some were cooking in un swept kitchen. She added that most of the homes visited did not have firewood storages and she only found women cooking as the men were either outside sitting under a shade or hanging out in the trading centers. She asked the participants to discuss why men don’t help their wives in preparation of food for the family. This was an interesting topic to them and they said the following. The men treat their wives as property and they are expected to do everything in a home right from cooking food, looking after animals, taking care of children and the sick. Nangobi Christine added that even if children run to their fathers or the wives ask the men to help with carrying children as the women cook, they always refuse or send them to their mothers . Naigaga Betty said that the men are always so demanding for food that even when they come a cross a dry firewood can not bring it home to cook food for the family. The men also reacted that most women are quarrelsome, don’t clean their kitchens which doesn’t attract them to sit and cook together, they added that even the Smokey environment is not conducive for them. Harriet told them that the Healthy and safe kitchen program aims at empowering them with knowledge and skills on how to work together in harmony,on how to build fuel efficient stoves that will vent out smoke, use less firewood, cook food fast, produce less ash , eliminate cases of fire accidents. She also said that the program aims at promoting the general hygiene in the kitchen, improve marriage relationship, encourage men and women to work together. The participants were very excited about the program and felt that it will improve on their marriage relationship and healthy status. They there for promised to attend as well as those who did not come with their husbands to bring them in the next meeting.
