Notes
Since the Healthy and safe Kitchens program will be the next in this village, Lorna took Tape along with her on this visit to introduce her to the community members. When we arrived the village the Pupils had not yet come to the meeting place and so Lorna took Tape around where Tape was able to see one stove in this village and asked the man who built it for him and he mentioned it was his sister from Bugiri District. After moving around, we came back to the meeting place. At the meeting place we were joined by the Pupils who had come to attend their lesson. Lorna greeted the pupils and asked them how they were and mentioned that she brought them a visitor today where she let Tape introduce herself to them. After the introductions, we looked at the review of the previous lesson which was on thinking and listening. We looked at why it is important to listen to our parents where Tape shared with them a story of what happens to children who don’t listen to not only their parents but elders too that, they never turnout successful and that they are always getting themselves into trouble. Some responses of why we should listen to our parents from the children were; so that they pay for them school fees, to get blessings from their parents while another mentioned that when they listen to their elders they will not get into trouble. After this we looked at the HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention which was their home work. Lorna asked them can children get HIV too? . A few said yes while others did not know. Lorna asked if they know of any child who is HIV positive?. They said yes. Lorna asked them how is HIV transmitted? , they said through sharing sharp instruments, washing clothes of a positive person , through sex ,sharing the same cup, plates, in accidents, through birth among others. Lorna thanked them for their answers but corrected them that HIV is not spread through hugging, playing with an infected person, neither through sharing clothes. Lorna told them no one wants to get HIV but unfortunately they do and that some are born with it. She encouraged them not to fear or disassociate with them but to love them. Because of time we did not do Prevention as it was time for for the community members meeting. After the children had left, the parents started to come to the meeting place. When they were 10 in number we decided to start the meeting. The meeting was started by word of prayer and thereafter the chairman’s open remarks who then invited Lorna to teach them. Lorna mentioned that she had not come alone and asked that Tape introduce herself. She introduced herself and mentioned that in the end she will let them know why she tagged with Lorna on this visit. We started by reviewing the previous lessons on communication Skills, Managing emotions and thereafter we Lorna mentioned that today we are looking at Gender roles. Lorna looked at Gender roles of men while Tape looked at Gender roles for women. Lorna started by explaining what Gender is as the stare of being male and female. She went ahead and mentioned that these roles have been mainly determined by culture where culture says a man does this and a man does the other. She asked the men what some of their roles and responsibilities are; Musa mentioned to take care of his wife and children. Lorna asked him whether his wife was around and she put up her hand and Lorna asked her whether he does what he said and she agreed and went ahead to kneel down and thank him in front of the community together with tape which made the community members clap and shout(it was good to see). Aziz mentioned to build structures like latrines, bathrooms as a man that is his role, Tiffu mentioned that his role is to provide food fo his family, others were; build, graze animals, dig among others. After Lornas part, Tape took over and started by introducing herself and about the stoves program and asked that when the time comes for them to start working here that they cooperate with her and the stoves program. After this she shared about her role and responsibility as a woman in her home. She mentioned her role is to cook food, bathe the children, wash her husbands clothes , lay the bed. After sharing her roles she asked other women to share too. Some of the responses were; sweeping the compound, cook food, wash clothes , graze animals where Tape mentioned isn’t that for the men and they said both men and women, taking water for their husbands to bathe, taking care of the children when they are sick among others. Tiffu put up his hand and mentioned they forgot something where he said produce children we all laughed. Lorna joked and called out Mukyala Tiffu to get ready which made everyone laugh. Tape thanked them for their responses and for fulfilling their responsibilities and to the men too she told them they can help their wives in some of the chores at home. Tape mentioned that in a home the man is the head while the woman is the neck and the rest of the body are the children. She asked everyone to work hand in hand for the wellness of our homes. After that Lorna took over again and asked them to clap for Tape which they did. Lorna mentioned that when we all fulfill our responsibilities at home everyone is happy. She asked the men to help their wives whenever necessary like to cook, look after the children among others. Lorna asked them to mobilize more people for the next meeting and mentioned that we will look at the father and mothers roles towards their children.. The chairman asked the community to appreciate Tape and Lorna for the lesson and that they were excited for the new Healthy kitchens Program. They will work with the Kibo staff like they have been with the Life Skills program.
