Notes
Irene went to Nawandyo A to teach about burns ,scalds and gastrointestinal worms. Before the lessons started as Irene was waiting for the members to gather she visited a breast feeding mother who had just given birth a few weeks back to check on the general condition of both the mother and the baby. During the interaction the mother had a few complaints with the baby like constipation that Irene helped her on how to handle because being a young mother she didn’t know how to handle it. The meeting started with a word from the chairman who thanked all members for turning up,kibo for the good work done in their village and also urged the members to mobilize others to come for the lessons. He then invited Irene to say a word to the members. Irene made a review of the previous lesson, there after discussed burns, scalds and intestinal worms to the members. Asking several questions on the causes, differences, degrees and the first Aid for burns, members gave the local methods they use to treat burns and these involved the use of local herbs. Saida explained that rabbit fur when burnt into Ashes is put on the wound for quick healing, vaginal fluids said vero and urine among others were some of the examples given that members use as first Aid and treatment of burns in their community and a few go to hospitals because they believe that burns are not treated in hospitals. With details of risks on the things used as treatment, ugly scars, sepsis, chronic infections, Irene discouraged members from using the local herbs and advised the members on the recommendable things to use as first Aid like clean running water on the burnt area and others as she discussed. After the burns Irene discussed gastrointestinal worms still giving details on the duration of deworming, symptoms and signs Incase one has worms, different gastrointestinal worms, and the routine government outreaches that members can use to access the drugs for deworming.
