Notes
Tom made a trip to kalalu to discuss and share about the safe water chain and preparing the village for borehole survey. Tom addressed the safe water chain by asking residents how water can get contaminated from the borehole. Members mentioned and shared about dirty jericans, when people cover the jericans with their dirty hand, storage facilities, dirty cups and bad practices like drinking water on the same cup your using to draw water from the pot. After Tom then asked how water can be kept safe from the borehole and they mentioned points like collecting water in clean jericans, storing it in clean containers or pots and making sure that drinking water is boiled and the pots always and often cleaned. The residents also mentioned points like teaching children to always wash their hands before drawing water from the pots. They also agreed that covers on pots should be kept clean and routine checking and cleaning of the pots. Some members suggested that other residents take even months without checking in the pots but only keep refilling which is unsafe because even a rat or from can die in a pot but if not routinely checked, that rat or frog can decompose in the pot hence contaminating the water. Tom thanked the residents for their participation. One of the committee members the vice chairperson encouraged fellow women to lead in making sure they water is maintained clean from the borehole until its used. She said the women are the homes doctors because most of the activities concerning water are spearheaded by women. After that lesson, Tom mentioned that the surveyors will be going to the village soon. This brought excitement among the members. Some danced and many clapped in joy for the news. Tom also reminded them of their roles in this activity and called for the water user committee to be very active and to encourage other residents to also participate actively. Tom left for jinja.
