Notes
Suzan went to the village to teach about the kitchen safety and the importance of having a firewood storage in the kitchens. This was an abrupt visit mostly to find out weather the community members had constructed good firewood storage stands, were cooking on their fuel efficient stoves on a daily basis and if they had improved on the hygiene in the kitchens. When she arrived, she went to the lower section and found some of the active participants with their chairperson Gerald at the meeting place who welcomed her to the village. They briefly first discussed about the current village status whereby the chairperson reported that all the participants at the lower section were now cooking on their stoves on a daily basis, and those that had learnt how to build stoves were now teaching the members at the upper section how to build stoves as well as encouraging them to improve on their other facilities. This was carried out because they wanted to make sure they were all at the same level by attending all the healthy and safe kitchens lessons since they were in the same village. Suzan was glad to hear such good news that day and she suggested they walk around the village while visiting different homes. As they walked, Suzan found most stoves well maintained but with poor hygiene whereby some kitchens were unswept with ash covered around with dirty utensils all over. She began teaching the participants how improve on their hygiene in the kitchens so as to avoid food contamination from germs and flies. She encouraged them to see that they sweep their kitchens all the time and clean all the utensils immediately after cooking and having their meals. This can help them live healthy life with their families free from diseases. Suzan also observed that the members had constructed new facilities such as the firewood storages and stocked enough firewood on them. A few buildings needed to be smeared especially the bathrooms and latrines because the rains had washed off all the dirt. Later after the home visits, Suzan thanked all the members for the good work done and encouraged them to continue maintaining all their facilities and cooking on their stoves everyday.
