Notes
Maria went to Kishaike to teach about postnatal care, post abortion care & breastfeeding and complementary feeding. The VHT as always started the meeting with a word of prayer, he then thanked everyone for turning up, thanked Kibo staff for the continued love and knowledge. Maria was invited to speak to the members. Maria thanked everyone for coming and introduced the topic as postnatal care, post abortion care, & breastfeeding and complementary feeding. The discussion started by defining the term postnatal care and post abortion care, identifying what exactly is done, and what hinders most mothers to go for these services. Maria gave a clear definition and said that it is a service provided to mothers and they new born babies immediately after the birth of a placenta and in the first six weeks of life after birth. Members shared the benefits and some of the barriers of postnatal care and post abortion care and Maria encouraged them to go back and seek for postnatal care as it helps both the mother and new born baby with their emotional and physical change. But Rose said that they haven’t been aware of this service, she was so great full for the knowledge provided and promised to follow the advise given by the health educator. Furthermore members together with Maria discussed the benefits of breastfeeding and complementary feeding;” when do mothers start breastfeeding their baby and at what age should a child stop breastfeeding “ asked Racheal”. Maria said that it is better to start breastfeeding as soon as it is born, for the first breast milk is good for the development of the brain. Breastfeeding your baby act as natural family planning method to some mothers said Annet. Maria then demonstrated how to breastfeed, how to hold a baby while breastfeeding, and she encouraged mothers to breastfeed their babies until they’re six months with out giving them any additional food, then introduce soft foods at six months, men to support their wives breastfeed their babies. The meeting ended with a word of prayer from Racheal.
