Notes
While in this community chris joined the community members to continue with discussions on the economic activities and as well follow up on the registration of the community at the subcounty. The chairman Mr, Gamali welcomed Kibo and thanked them for for choosing the community among many communities in the district he also cautioned the community members to be vigilant during this festive period , he said in many circumstances insecurity tends to increase so members should be security to one another. Last week’s meeting ended when community members agreed to establich an estimated budget of the whole community project including all membership and project contributions so that they can know whether to buy other scholastic materials for the secretary and the treasurer ans as well. Community Onions project: For starters, the community agreed to start onions growing project as an income generating activity where every member is a stakeholder , they resolved to share equal responsibilities to make sure they achieve their goal, chris has been engaging the community members in a series of discussions, during the meeting, the Chairperson, Mrs Norah kasoga reported about last week’s meeting , she said Mr Farouk and Mr Salumini who is the treasurer went to the farmers’ market in Namutumba town and found out that one tin of onion seeds costs 10,000 shillings , a tin of pesticides costs 7000 shillings, 10 kilograms of manure cost 8000 shillings and a spraying pump costs 75000 shillings as well, when they apply that on their one acre land, they found out that they will need 10 tins of seeds, 4 tins of pesticides, 20 kilograms of manure and one spraying pump. She added on tonsay that if 97 members contributed 500 shillings every week for three months , they would be having 582,000 shillings, she said this would be enough to start their project including labour and transport. However Mr Farouk requested the members to think about starting small, he said one acre is very big to start with citing no experience for them working as a group meanwhile the vice chairperson replied and said basing on the number of members and the reafy market of onions in the district, he tjought one acre would be good to start with as long as all the members work together and carry on their tasks as mandated to them by the constitution. Chris also requested members to think about Mr Farouks point of starting small with 1/2 an acre of land instead of them starting with 1 acre of land, chris said starting small would mean the community will be learning in the process of working together and therefore the losses will be minimized because they started small however chris observed murmuring within the members and therefore requested members to choose by show of hands whether to start with one are or half an acre, out of 37 members who attende the meeting, 20 people chose to start with one acre while the rest chose half an acre, chris encouraged the community members to be committed to the community project if they chose to start with an acre. Mr Mwalimu one of the community members and the elder in the community said he gave them the land however he requested the entire community to go with him and inspect the land after the meeting and acertain the texture of the soil, he said this was key to onions growing. Therefore chris will continue with disscussions on economic activities next week. Community registration, The commnity vice chairperson called the CDO and put the phone on loud speaker to speak to chris, chris informed the CDO about hiw the communitu is readyto reguster, he said they have the constitution ready and are currentlty planning to start growing onions as a community. The CDO said she was very impressed about the initiative however she advised the community members to make sure they put signatures against their names in the constitution , then they contribute 55,000 shillings fir registration. The CDO adviced the community to look through their constitution before they agrree to sign the after all that is done they can proceed to her iffice for registration since her offuce is open fir them any time. Chris thanked the CDO and encouraged the communitu just as the CDOhas told them, the chairperson promised to call for a meeting on saturday for a way forward.
