Notes
Lorna went to Ikumbya where as usual she was welcomed by songs and dances by the young teenagers. A few minutes into arrival, Ivan the secretary decided that we should go ahead and start the meeting. Ivan read out the agenda which started with an opening prayer and then opening remarks from both the chairman of the village and the chairman Kibo group. After their remarks, Lorna was invited to take over. Lorna thanked Jane for training the teenagers every other week and that this has helped the teens to stay out of trouble. She asked the community members to clap for her. After this we looked at the previous topic which was on Abstinence, Abstinence from sex. We looked at reasons why young girls and boys say yes to sex, why they say no and why they should say no, and how we can help them on this journey of Abstinence. The community barely remembered the lesson which made Lorna to go back a little more into the previous lesson. Some of the reasons for saying yes were; fear of loosing the relationship, parents not providing their basic needs, both young girls and boys admiring things like money, phones, sodas, curiosity among others. Reasons for saying no like ; fear of pregnancy, early marriages, fear of STDs , religion among others. Parents were encouraged to always talk to their children, instill discipline and religion in their children, tell them why sex at their age is not good and why and the consequences. On the topic of the day Rape and Defilement, Lorna asked the community what Rape was and Isabirye mentioned that it is forcing someone into the act of sex. Lorna asked if there was any other definition and they mentioned it was that one. Lorna mentioned when it comes to sex, there should be consent where consent is 2 people agree to have sex and if there is no consent and is forceful then that is rape. Lorna mentioned Rape can happen to anyone children, teens and adults alike. Lorna mentioned that rape is condemned by law imprisonment and can go up to death sentence if the person was HIV positive but most times victims are fearful and end up not reporting these cases or they are threatened by the perpetrators. We looked at what happens after Rape. Jane mentioned that one is supposed to report to the LC 1 first, then report to police. We added that the victim is not supposed to wash any evidence like bathe, wash the sheets as this would jeopardize the case. We also looked at the causes of Rape among which were; Alcohol and drug Abuse, lust, media , unemployed youth, poverty, perpetrators not convicted, adults and children living in one small bed roomed house , victims fearing to come out or report the cases among others. We looked at one in particular which is fear of reporting the cases which encourages the perpetrators to gain confidence to keep doing what they do. Covering up the cases and settling the cases amongst the 2 families are one of the reasons why these cases are still on the rise. She encouraged the community members to report these cases so that the perpetrators are brought to book. We also looked at the different categories of Rape like incest and marital Rape. Marital Rape got the community members overly active as the women agreed most about Marital Rape asking Lorna to teach them more and Jane even gave an example of a certain Jowali who forced his wife into sex and now her back was broken. Another man mentioned but marriage is for sex so why would his wife deny him sex?. He would just go ahead and rape her. This made everyone laugh but Lorna reminded to them that there should be consent and respect and she asked them to report these cases. One woman asked can men be raped and the men said yes why not. Lorna mentioned yes however few cases are reported because of fear . Next week we will look at consequences of rape , signs and also Defilement . The chairman Jane thanked Lorna for the lessons and mentioned that these lessons directly affect them and asked the community members to take these lessons seriously.
