Notes
The main purpose to Bukhudumira village was to meet with the leaders to talk about the future plans they have after receiving goats from Kibo group. A total of 55 community members received 55 goats from Kibo group and on a very good note none of the members has lost a goat. It was also reported by the chairman that about 8 goats have already given birth since receiving them from Kibo group and with some giving birth to two kids. So far 4 goats have produced two kids each something that has made many be proud of the goats they received from kibo. They say that these goats are really a big blessing to the community and will help them to uplift their economic levels quickly . Alex while talking to them he encouraged them to think big and come up with new ideas they can do as a community besides only looking after the goats and chickens. The community members told Alex that for sure having received goats from kibo is not the end and have already come together to think about what else they can do, amongst them is that each member that received a goat from kibo agreed to contribute 20,000= back to the general pool to help in other activities they can come up with. It means that if all bring in their contributions, they will raise about 1M shillings and together decide on another activity to do. Some of the plans still under discussion are buying a tent that help everyone in the community in good and bad times, can use this money to treat their goats as a group or can buy good seedlings to plant during the rainy season next year. Alex encouraged them all to continue working and be accountable to one another in whatever they do as a community. He thanked them for taking good care of their goats so far none of the goats has died and also suggested to them that they work together as a community to treat their goats as a community on one day that will be set aside after every 3 months. A veterinary doctor will be brought in by kibo staff to look at and treat all the kibo goats but they have to be ready to meet the costs. This was a highly welcomed idea by the leaders and would talk to all the members about it. This will be an opportunity to them because the doctor will be cheaper to all and also it’s an opportunity to continue encouraging all the members to look after their goats as required. MCD staff plans to follow up on all the villages that receive goats from kibo group for a period of one year before exiting the village however it will be limited visits most preferably on a quarterly basis (3 months). The community members together with the leaders will meet and agree on a date in the month of February to conduct a clinic day for the goats and follow up on all the goats. The community leaders were very proud to also show Alex a new chicken house under construction and will be used to keep more chickens next year. This community has seriously embarked on this program too very well and had sold off 11 roosters earning 300k. They plan to expand this program as well from next year.
