Notes
Lorna was in Naibowa village where she went to teach about Life stories and role models. We teach about Life Stories so that community members can learn from each other about different challenges and how they overcame and how they can impart these same lesson to their children. On the other hand we teach about role models so as to make us become better people. The meeting was started by an opening prayer and thereafter Wakiso took the community members through the previous lessons which was Bride price and the reason why Bride Price should be given or not given that is the advantages and disadvantages and that giving bride price does not mean buying a person. After that he took as through Decision making after which he handed over to Lorna. Lorna asked the community members to Appreciate Wakiso. We then looked at more steps in Decision making as previously we concentrated on THINKING about the situation as a major step into decision making. Today we looked at Prayer , that is praying for Gods guidance and wisdom concerning a decision one needs to make, considering personal and family values for example in this family no one gets pregnant until they are married can be a family value. Seeking Advice , listening to Advice , considering all alternatives available and lastly taking responsibility of the decision made that is the consequences. After this we looked at the topic of the day Role models. A role model is someone whom one has complete admiration for and wants to be like them. Lorna asked the community members if they had role models or if they think they are role models themselves?, to the community or to their children. Muyodi mentioned he had one . Lorna asked him what was it that he admired about this person so as to be their role model. He mentioned that he is very smart, a good time keeper and takes good care of his family as all his children are educated and responsible people of the society. Lorna mentioned that was a good role model. She asked anyone else to tell us who their role model was. Nabirye mentioned a certain lady in the community why , she mentioned that because she has a very clean home, children are well mannered they cannot pass anyone without greeting them, she’s awidow but very hardworking. Lorna thanked them for their responses. She mentioned that it is important to have a role model in our lives as these people make us better than we are. She urged the community members to always look out for that person who is ahead of them , whom they desire to be like and if they are in the village consult with them , ask them how they are what they are. If they are far away try and emulate them . She asked the community members would they consider themselves role models to their children or community?. She asked those who did not have a role model to find one or become one themselves. She mentioned some of the parents their children are embarrassed of them because they are always quarreling, don’t fulfill their parental responsibilities, come home late so such a person may not be a good role model. We concluded with Life stories where Lorna mentioned to them that Life story is about listening and learning from each other. She asked that in this session the community is free to let us in their life and it’s volunteering and not a must and that whatever is shared is solely for learning purposes and encouraging one another and not using it to tarnish someone’s image. Robinah shared about her life and how her father was married to 4 women but her mother later left the home leaving her with her 3 step mothers who always mistreated her to the point of one day one of her step mothers was going to burn her with porridge. She barely ate food, never went to the best schools. She feared reporting to her dad because she knew she would be denied school fees. Long story short she ended in Senior 3 and got married but she vowed that her children would never go through what she went through. All her children are educated. Her husband left her for another woman but later returned to her and they are still married up to now despite the fact that her husband had other children out of wedlock. Muyodi also shared his life story of how he became an alcohol seller to pay his fees and later became a medic. Lorna asked if the community members learnt anything from these stories and they mentioned a lot. Like hardwork, perseverance among others. We will look at goal setting next time. Lorna advised them to prepare for their children for 2021 as they prepare for school. She mentioned to them not to spend all their money during the festive season but to save some for the needs of their children at School in the next Academic year. Lorna mentioned to them that this was the last meeting of the year until 2022 January. Lorna bid farewell to the community and asked them to put everything they learnt into practice. The community was grateful for the lessons and asked Lorna to stay in touch.
