Notes
Alex met with the community leaders of Buluvu to discuss ways to involve all the community people into the Kibo Mvule community Development program. Since last year, there has been a big challenge of poor response and turn up into this program and this was cited to be brought by poor leadership that would drive the program in the community. It was then resolved to come up with a new committee towards the end of last year to try see that people turn up for meetings. This year as MCD program plans to continue working in this village, there needs to be new ways and approaches to get more people into this program. When the community leaders were asked, a moslem leader called Lukeman Bumaali suggested that the LC1 chairman needs to be at the fore front in mobilizing all the people to attend the kibo group meetings and possibly tell people why it’s very important to attend these meetings. The church leader Mr. Muyinda Robert also suggested that if there is a chance to add trees to the village, then people that come to kibo meetings should be prioritized and also give trees that all people love to plant so that everyone will take good care of them. The challenge in this village was that it’s very hard for people to get seedlings of Mvule, Musita and other kinds since most of these trees were cut down. It was noted that many people tried to look after their Mvule seedlings given to them in the first phase but other kinds like musizi struggled due to the scotching sunshine and long drought. The village leader Mr. Ayubu has committed himself to spear head the mobilization strategy and make sure many of his community members attend the meetings and lessons. While in the meeting, the village leaders bought the idea that was brought by Alex W to spend more time with the people in their homes talking to them about the value of this program and the need to work together as a village. The village will be divided into sections to walk into the homes and it was thought that the village be divided up into four sections. Visiting people in their homes will also help in mobilizing people to come to the meetings whenever called upon and any incentives like trees brought would be given to the community members that attend these meetings. The village chairman pointed out that out of the 200+ homes in the village, the target would be at least 150 households attend kibo group meetings. The leaders appreciated kibo group for this initiative and ideas of involving everyone in kibo group activities. During the next meeting, MCD staff will plan to walk home to home talking to people in the village to be part of this program together with the leaders as they continue also to engage all people understand the values of planting trees.
