Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Suzan went to the village purposely to follow up on the stove usage and maintenance of other program facilities through an evaluation process. This was carried out through a home to home visit mainly at the lower section of the village. When she got there, she was welcomed by some of the committee group members, Namuganza the secretary, Gerald the group chairperson, Ida the VHT and other active group members. They walked together house to house while evaluating each household through observations and asking the participants different questions concerning the fuel efficient stoves. She kept on asking each participant if they were cooking on their new improved stoves on a daily basis or if there were any challenges still faced while cooking on them. However all the members reported that they were happily enjoying to cook on their new saving stoves. Suzan also observed that all the group members were cooking on their new stoves, had smeared all their buildings and constructed good firewood storage stands piled with enough firewood to take them through. One of the active elderly women reported that the healthy and safe kitchens program has greatly improved on her general life style and she no longer suffers looking for firewood in the forest since she saves a lot of firewood on her kitchen stand which usually lasts longer. Another young lady called Selina was found trying to roof her kitchen with fresh dried grass which was exciting to see that day. Because of time, Suzan managed to evaluate only 25 homes at the lower section of the village and planned to continue with the remaining section at the upper section in the next coming visit.
