- Lorna went to Ikumbya for the very first meeting this year where she was to meet the community and teach on Rape and Defilement. Rape is the forceful sexual intercourse without the consent of the other person while Defilement is when an older person gets into sexual intercourse with a person under 18 years. Both are liable to imprisonment of up to 14 years in Uganda. This lesson is taught so that parents, children understand what Rape and Defilement are so they do not keep quiet about it when it happens.
When Lorna reached the village the meeting place , there were already a few people at the meeting place and after waiting sometime, Lorna asked a few people to go ahead and remind the community members of the meeting. The meeting started a little late however when the community members had come, the chairman read out the agenda which started by an opening prayer, Jane giving a review of what happened in the village during the break and also the chairman inviting the members followed by Lorna.
After all the speakers had spoken, Lorna greeted the community members and asked them how Christmas was and they mentioned it went well and the chairman mentioned that none of their children got involved in risky behaviors and thanked Kibo / Lorna for the lessons. After this Lorna asked to be reminded of the last 3 lessons that were taught. Only a few people could remember which was Ivan and the chairman and so because of this, Lorna went back into doing a review of the previous lessons where we looked at causes and Dangers of Alcohol , Abstinence reasons for saying yes to sex and reasons for saying no. After these Ivan reminded us of the last topic before breaking off which was What is Rape , causes of Rape and the consequences. Lorna asked what is Rape, and steve mentioned that it was forcing someone into sex without their consent, we then looked at some cause of rape like ; Alcohol and drug abuse, unemployment, poverty, child neglect among others . We also looked at the consequences of Rape like; imprisonment, self neglect, pregnancy, HIV/ AIDS, among others. We then looked at more consequences of Rape like ; behavioral changes like bed wetting, fingers sucking, withdrawal, fear of undressing to bathe, physical like ; wounds, STIs psychological like ; crying ,unusual sexual behavior among others.
In conclusion, Since they came late, Lorna gave them homework of signs and way forward on the next lesson/ meeting. We also discussed how to get more people to the meeting and the community members promised to come in larger numbers. They also mentioned that it’s because of the sicknesses that’s why the attendance was not good. They however thanked Lorna for the lessons they had no woman divorcing.
