Poultry Day 2
Notes
Diana went to Bulyowa to teach about poultry lessons. Arrived early before mid day. The community had not gathered yet but were coming in gradually. It is from here that Diana moved around reminding them of the lesson, by God’s grace they gathered. The chairman mr Waiswa opened with a word of prayer. He told the community members to keep time because these lessons benefit the entire community. He invited Diana to take them through the lesson. Diana thanked everyone for attending. She told them that she knows that they have a lot of commitments, but these lessons too are to transform their community of Bulyowa. Kibo wants to see them happy and have a transformed community. They all clapped their hands. Diana told them that all the programs of Kibo that have been in their community of Bulyowa are to develop their community with the help of the community members. Diana introduced the lesson of the day, which was poultry. Diana taught about hatching and the laying stations. Before she went a head with the lesson, she asked them how they take care of their chicken before they hatch. Wilbur said that they make a hole and make the chicken lay in that hole. Diana said that it is good, but they need to add some thing warm, like dry grass, sand and add it in the round hole where the hen sits, making it warm for the hen. Diana added on that chicken nests must be kept in dark places. Collect the eggs three times a day. Diana told them to allow good air circulation in the laying house. Diana told them the laying stations should be clean and the eggs too should be clean, they should not be cracked so that the diseases don’t penetrate inside. Diana told them that the incubation period for the hens can go up to 20 to 21 days. During this time they have to monitor the hen and mark each egg it lays with a pencil. We use a pencil because it has no chemicals. Wako added on that as a community, they should help one another in case they see a hen that is not theirs and it wants to hatch, they should give it back to the owner. Diana thanked Wako for that insight, and asked the community to work together in unity. Wako asked why some chicks are not hatched, Patrick Waiswa responded saying that it is because the eggs were infected, Dongo said that it is God’s plan. Babirye also added that it is the will of God. She went on to say that it is like a pregnant woman some times she fails to deliver children who are alive that applies to the chicken. Diana agreed with them, she told them that sometimes the eggs can be cracked or they were left out during the hatching process. The discussion went on as Diana told them that she will continue from there in the next lesson. The community was happy and too excited about the lesson. The chairman mr Waiswa Patrick from Namuhingira, was attending for the first time, he thanked Kibo and community empowerment for helping them in their community. He said that he will encourage some of his members to attend. He closed with a word of prayer.
