Notes
Chris and Alex Bumulumbye went to this village and while there , they had discussions with the community about opening a community bank account, under the Mvule community program workflow , after the community establishes its income generating project committee , it is taught about safe ways of saving their money and that is through banking . They discussed about the benefits of keeping money in the bank and the dangers of keeping money in their houses meeting. The meeting which involved 30 community members including the chairman and the VHT was held at Mr Mujib’s home because the Mvule staff decided to start holding meetings from different homes therefore the next meeting will be at a different venue. During the meeting Chris and Alex discovered that the community has poor saving methods, this was revealed when Chris inquired about how each members was keeping their money. Mr Magoola hakim said he keeps his money in his wallet because that way ,he feels he is in control of his money but not in the bank where you have to fill many documents to access or save your money however Chris advised him that it is possible to save his money in the bank and spare some for his wallet too, Chris said money in the bank is most times for future use and cater for uncertainties. Meanwhile Mr Magumba said he eats all his money because he feels unsettled when he has money either in his pockets or house , he said he fears burglars and thieves to attack him however Alex bamulumbye advices him that money in the bank is very secure to both the money and the owner and no one can know you have the money in the bank except the bank itself. Alex bamulumbye said when the community saves their money on the bank, their is transparency because there are four signatories attached to that account by the community members therefore no one can access the money unless they have the community’s approval and secondly, the community can access other financial services like loans and credit facilities from the bank, this can help the community invest more in their economic activities. Most community members agreed that they have been saving and keeping their money in a box at the treasurer’s house which they have discovered is very unsafe and their money never multiplies unlike in the bank and therefore they have to start thinking about opening their bank account .The chairperson Mrs Norah thanked Kibo and Chris and Alex in particular for teaching them the best way to keep their money , she said she will call a meeting on Monday and decide whether they open the bank account now or in the future when their money increases. Alex , chris and other community leaders then went to inspect the community onions project, Alex thanked the community leaders for mobilizing the community to start such a wonderful project which he hopes will benefit the whole community, he however encouraged the leaders to make sure every household is involved in this project. Chris will continue with the lessons on opening the community bank account next week. This time Chris plans to gather the community members at a different home , this is intended to mobilize the whole community to benefit from the lessons and projects in the community.
